Car safety technology available in newer vehicles, some that come as standard equipment, have been shown to aid motorists and make it less likely that the driver will be involved in a collision. Learning about the newest features and keeping them in mind when it comes time to purchase a newer model can improve your safety on the roads. According to the United Services Automobile Association, many vehicles come standard with cruise control, monitoring of tire pressure and other features that make a car safer and driving easier. However, new technologies arise that continue to improve the safety factor for motorists. Explore some of the new features that often come standard in newer models that can reduce the risk of a collision.
Back Over Protection
Accidents are common when backing out of a parking space or driveway, particularly if there are small children around. Backup protection car safety technology provides a camera view of the rear of a vehicle as soon as the transmission is placed in reverse. This allows the driver to see whether cars are behind the vehicle or whether there are motorcycles, bicycles or pedestrians.
Protection against Front End Crashes
Motorists get into crashes with the vehicle in front when they are driving distracted or don’t notice that the car ahead is slowing down or stopping. Crash prevention systems for the front of a vehicle use sensors that monitor the distance and speed. If an imminent crash is sensed, the driver will be notified, either through a vibration in the steering wheel, an alarm or visual clues. Some systems automatically slow, or apply the brakes of a vehicle to either lessen the impact of the crash or prevent it.
Lane Keep Assistance
Lane departures can cause a sideswipe or head-on collision, which results in serious injuries and a high rate of fatalities. Many of these types of accidents are caused by distracted driving, falling asleep behind the wheel and losing control of the vehicle because of speeding. Car safety technology that provides a lane departure warning uses a camera to monitor the vehicle’s lane position. If a vehicle merges or changes lanes without using a turn signal, the alarm will go off. Warning alerts are through seat or steering wheel vibration, an audio alert or visual aids. Some vehicle models use braking or light steering to correct the problem.
Monitoring of Blind Spots
Many vehicles have blind spots that interfere with a driver’s vision when trying to change lanes or make a turn. Because the driver may not be able to see clearly, it can lead to a collision. Technology that incorporates car safety technology that monitors blind spots gives out an alert if a vehicle is in the car’s blind spot. This alarm becomes louder if the driver turns on their signal, indicating an imminent lane change. Some vehicle models can access steering or brakes to avoid a blind spot accident and resulting in serious injuries.
Adaptive Headlights
Roads that are dark or have a lot of curves can make it difficult to see. This increases the odds of being involved in a collision, particularly with pedestrians. Some vehicles come equipped with adaptive headlights as one of the new car safety technology features. This means that sensors in the vehicle use speed and the movement of the steering wheel to pivot the headlights in the same direction you are driving. This helps reduce the risk of a crash, particularly with pedestrians or bicycle riders who are more difficult to spot.
