Car Accident Involving CHP Officer in Stockton

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported a Stockton car accident involving a CHP officer on Highway 99 on the afternoon of Monday, November 9, 2020. The Stockton car crash occurred at approximately 12:15 p.m. on northbound State Route 99 just south of Arch Road. A CHP traffic spokesperson said a grey Honda Civic was headed northbound on SR-99 when the vehicle reportedly lost control, struck the center divider, veered to the right, and struck a silver Toyota Highlander. The impact propelled the Toyota in a northeast direction toward the guardrail and into a CHP traffic officer and motorcycle that was parked along the righthand shoulder of the highway. The Toyota continued for a short time before overturning and coming to a rest upside down on the shoulder of the roadway.

Officials said the Toyota driver suffered minor injuries in the rollover accident while the CHP traffic officer sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening. The CHP motorcycle officer was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Further details on the Stockton motorcycle accident were not immediately available.

How Long Do I Have to Bring a Car Accident Injury Claim in California?

According to the California Code of Civil Procedure Section 335.1, California law provides two years to bring a personal injury lawsuit for a car accident. What this means is if you were hurt in a motor vehicle collision in Stockton or elsewhere in California, you should seek the assistance of an experienced injury attorney to build your case before the statute of limitations expires. If a lawsuit is not filed or a settlement is not accepted from the insurance company, the case may be dismissed by the court, and the legal right to the recovery of personal injury damages may be lost.

Keep in mind that other parties may be involved in a car accident case, such as a government entity or an automaker for a defective roof that fails to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 216 on rollover accidents and roof crush resistance. In cases involving government employees and entities, the statute of limitations may be shortened to 180 days or six months from the time of the incident.
