Morse Avenue Traffic Accident Knocks Out Power When Vehicle Strikes Utility Pole

A car accident in the Arden-Arcade area of Sacramento ended up cutting power to around 18,000 customers in the Sacramento Municipal Utility District on February 22. SMUD officials said the accident occurred sometime around 5:00 in the morning when a vehicle struck a power pole along Morse Avenue. An hour later, 8,000 customers in the Arden-Arcade area were still without electricity. No information was released on whether the driver of the vehicle was injured in the crash and how it occurred.

The Problems With Power Outages

Power outages certainly cause problems in the homes that are affected and can not only cut off their lights but other systems such as heat and the ability to cook. However, a power outage caused by a car accident can have far-reaching consequences for drivers on the road. Traffic lights can be affected, which increases the risk of additional traffic accidents. Although motorists should know what to do if the street lights and signals go out, not everyone may be familiar with how to navigate what has now become a four-way stop. The following information might help:

  • When a traffic light is not functioning, always treat the intersection as if it has stop signs.
  • When two vehicles arrive at an intersection at the same time, the one on the right goes first.
  • If the intersection is three-way, the thru traffic goes first.
  • When vehicles arrive at an intersection at different times, the one that got there first is allowed to go, and the others proceed in order of arrival.
  • If two vehicles arrive opposite each other at an intersection with a non-functioning traffic light, the vehicle going straight goes first.
  • When cars arrive opposite to each other and both are turning – one to the right and one to the left, the vehicle turning right goes first.
  • Use your signals so other motorists know what you are doing.

Causes of a Car Accident Other Than Driver Error

Solo vehicle collisions are normally caused by an error by the driver. However, there are other reasons a crash can occur beyond the driver’s control. They may include:

  • Poor maintenance on the part of the government entity: Potholes, bad lighting, debris in the roadway, and other problems can lead to a single-vehicle car accident. The government entity in charge of maintenance may be held responsible financially in these cases.
  • Hit-and-run driver: Fleeing drivers are becoming more common in Sacramento as well as in other parts of the state. When these accidents happen, an experienced injury attorney can uncover the evidence that the car accident was the fault of another driver who left the scene.
  • Defective auto parts: Recalls of autos for defects happen all the time. A defective tire, brakes, or problems with the steering or the engine can all lead to an auto accident. When this happens, the vehicle’s manufacturer can be held responsible through an auto product liability lawsuit.

How a Single-Vehicle Car Accident Is Investigated

Our investigative team has uncovered the cause of many car accidents. By gathering that evidence, it supports our client’s claim for injury compensation. The investigators check for mistakes in the police report and talk to witnesses. They perform accident reconstruction and look for signs of negligence by the government entity in charge. In addition, they look for video footage of the car accident from road and traffic cameras.

Our Sacramento injury attorneys take over once the evidence is gathered. They use it to build a strong case in support of our client’s compensation claim.
