Campgrounds Near Sacramento

One of Sacramento’s often-mentioned attributes is that it is near other destinations with more to offer. While we love the Sacramento area, it is hard to deny that its proximity to many beautiful campgrounds is one of the pros of living here.

Many State Park campgrounds are within a few hours’ drive and free, primitive camping areas throughout the Tahoe National Forest and El Dorado County.

While some campgrounds remain closed due to COVID-19 restrictions, the following is a list of campgrounds near Sacramento that have opened. They all require reservations, and many parks are still closed for day use.

Beal’s Point Campground

Beal’s Point is probably the closest campground to Sacramento. It is located on the shores of Folsom Lake near the dam. The Folsom Lake area is vast, and Beal’s Point is one of three regional campgrounds. It offers 49 family campsites that include fire pits and picnic tables. There are 20 additional sites with full hookups for recreational vehicles. The campground provides easy access to the lake and connects with the Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail (the American River Bike Trail).

Beal’s Point campground guests can access restrooms, coin-operated showers, and drinkable water.

Ice House Campground

Located in Pollock Pines, California, within the El Dorado National Forest, Ice House Campground is approximately 80 miles northeast of Sacramento. It is located on the Ice House Reservoir’s banks, making it an excellent spot for paddle sports, fishing, and swimming. The campsite is surrounded by ponderosa pines. More than 80 campsites are available; some are tent sites only, but many are set up for RVs.

Sly Park Recreation Area

If you grew up in Sacramento during the 1980s, you probably remember Sly Park as the place you camped for a week as your sixth-grade year ended. Only an hour’s drive northeast of Sacramento, Sly Park has nearly 200 campsites available. It is located on the edge of the El Dorado National Forest. From the campsite, Jenkinson Lake is easily accessible for water sports, fishing, swimming, and boating.

Sly Park is a very popular family campground. The campsites are spread out over 10 separate areas. The campground caters to tent campers and those with smaller RVs.

Coloma Resort

If you want a more luxurious camping experience, Coloma Resort, adjacent to the American River’s South Fork, has roomy cabins available for rent. The resort boasts riverfront access, children’s playgrounds, a swimming pool, and a general store. The resort also has sites available for tent camping and RV camping.

Rancho Seco Recreation Area

The Rancho Seco Recreation Area is located less than one-hour southeast of Sacramento. The campgrounds circle Rancho Seco Lake, a popular destination for water activities. There are hiking trails along the shore of the lake and boat rental facilities.

The campground features 32 sites for tent camping and 18 RV sites with electric hookups.

Eagle Point and D.L. Bliss Campgrounds

Located in beautiful Emerald Bay State Park in South Lake Tahoe, Eagle Point Campground is worth the two-hour drive from Sacramento. The highlight of the region is the gorgeous, clear blue Lake Tahoe. In addition, there are panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Eagle Point is one of several campgrounds that encircle the southeast side of Lake Tahoe.

Eagle Point Campground includes nearly 100 campsites that accommodate tents and RVs. Overnight campers have access to coin-operated showers and flushing toilets.

D.L. Bliss State Park is directly north of Eagle Point Campground. It also showcases the area’s natural beauty. It features more than 160 tent or RV sites.
