A box truck accident blocked Highway 99’s northbound lanes on a bridge near Elk Grove on June 22, causing major delays. The accident happened at about 4:30 in the morning near the off-ramp for Dillard Road and was reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The accident blocked two lanes, and there is construction ongoing at that bridge. A minor injury was reported in the crash. A tow truck was required to remove the large vehicle. The roadways were cleared at 7:23 a.m. An investigation into the cause of the box truck accident is underway by the CHP.

Reasons That Box Trucks Crash

Box truck crashes can occur for a number of reasons. When the accident involves other vehicles, serious injuries and fatalities can occur. Some of the causes and types of box truck crashes are found below:

  • Inexperienced drivers: Some drivers rent box trucks from companies such as Ryder or U-Haul to save money when moving. However, handling a big box truck can be difficult for someone with little to no experience. Box truck crashes of this type are fairly common.
  • Rollover crashes: Inexperience, speeding, distracted driving, and other problems can lead to rollover box truck crashes. A rollover can also be caused by loading the truck improperly so that the weight isn’t balanced. When turning a sharp curve at too high a speed, the truck can overbalance, resulting in a rollover.
  • Blind spots: Box trucks and tractor-trailers and other large vehicles have blind spots that prevent the driver from seeing what is going on to their sides and rear. If another driver is pacing the box truck on the side and the trucker attempts to change lanes, it can cause a serious collision.
  • Speeding: Speeding in a box truck presents the same dangers as it does in other large vehicles. In an emergency, the stopping distance is longer, and the driver could lose control. Speeding around curves can cause box truck crashes as well as rollovers.
  • Fatigue: Fatigue in a driver is dangerous no matter what type of vehicle they are traveling in. Whether making deliveries or transporting their own goods, those who drive box trucks may push themselves too hard to get the task completed. This can lead to box truck crashes if the driver nods off or loses focus on the task at hand.
  • Distracted driving: A driver looking on their GPS for an address or texting or chatting on a cell phone to pass the time can cause an accident. These can be checked to see if the driver was occupied with something else when the collision occurred.
  • Bad scheduling: A company that employs delivery drivers can sometimes insist on a schedule that is too tight to be safe. This can cause drivers to speed to make their deliveries on time and result in an accident. In these cases, not only is the driver guilty of acting negligently, the company that employs them may be held responsible.
