Biker Killed in Vallejo Motorcycle Crash

I’m Ed Smith, a Vallejo motorcycle accident lawyer. A motorcycle rider died in an accident on September 6 after colliding with a vehicle at State Route 37 and 29 in Vallejo. The name of the accident victim, age 30, has not yet been released by authorities.

Details of the Crash

According to a representative of the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 2:00 in the morning and involved a motorcycle and a Ford van. The motorcycle rider was reported as riding his bike, identified as a Triumph Tiger, on SR-37 westbound when the bike crashed into a guardrail. However, the van was reported of having driven over the motorcycle by another news source. The motorcyclist was reported as being fatally injured by the accident. The CHP has said that neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have been precipitating factors in the accident.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the motorcyclist who passed away in this tragic collision.

Information Sought in the Crash

The crash is under investigation as to cause. Persons with information are being asked to call the non-emergency line for the CHP or the area office in Solano county.

Motorcycle Fatalities

In 2015, there were 4,693 motorcyclists killed nationwide. This number represents an increase from the years 1997 and 2008. Using current numbers, motorcycle fatalities in 2015 showed more than twice the number of deaths in 1997.

Characteristics of Fatal Motorcycle Accidents

There are a number of characteristics that are found in motorcycle fatalities:

  • 27 percent of bikers involved in fatal crashes lacked a valid license. This contrasts with 15 percent of drivers of passenger vehicles.
  • Of all fatalities, 41 percent of the crashes were defined as single crashes, involving no other vehicle.
  • 59 percent of fatal crashes involved one or more other vehicles.
  • In 1997, 3 percent of motorcyclists who died were 50 years old or greater while in 2015 this age group accounted for 35 percent.
  • 91 percent of motorcyclists who died were males in 2015.
  • Females were passengers on the motorcycle in 61 percent of fatal accidents.
  • Helmeted drivers accounted for 61 percent of deaths; helmeted passengers accounted for 47 percent of passengers.
  • Big engines between 1,200 and 1,400 cc, accounted for 31 percent of those in fatal crashes in 2015 while the same sized engines accounted for only 9 percent in the year 2000.
  • Overall, fatal motorcycle accidents occurred during the late spring and summer months.
  • Half of all fatal motorcycle accidents happened on weekends, usually in the evening.
  • Fatal accidents occurred on highways or major roads about 50 percent of the time. Urban areas saw more fatalities than rural ones.
  • Bikers with a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit or above had 28 percent of all fatal accidents.

Rules for Safe Motorcycling

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists should follow some simple rules to stay safe:

  • Take a motorcycle education course, and make sure your bike is registered and you are licensed.
  • Do routine maintenance on the motorcycle and make sure to check tire pressure, all brakes, the tread on the tires, oil gauges, signals and make sure your headlights are in working order.
  • Wear a helmet and make sure it meets the Department of Transportation safety criteria.
  • Don’t drink and drive.
  • Make sure to follow the rules of the road, and don’t cut in and out in front of other vehicles.
