Semi Crash Causes Hours Long Road Closure

A big rig crash with a light pickup resulted in an injury on June 11 along southbound Bradshaw Road in the Vineyard area of Sacramento County. The accident involved a Nissan pickup and occurred around 2:38 in the afternoon just south of Vintage Park Drive, according to the report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The pickup was left blocking the southbound lane of Bradshaw Road, and debris was strewn across the roadway.

Injury Reported in Big Rig Crash

Both the CHP and emergency responders with the Sacramento Fire Department arrived at the scene of the semi-truck crash to assist. It was determined that one individual had suffered at least a minor injury. A tow truck had to be called to remove the semi, and the company that employs the driver was advised of the collision.

Bradshaw Road reopened to traffic about 5:19 p.m. An investigation by the CHP will determine how the big rig crash occurred and assign fault to the negligent driver.

Accidents With Big Rigs

A big rig crash with another vehicle is always dangerous due to its much larger size and weight. Although these accidents can occur anywhere, two-lane roads are especially dangerous. They occur when a driver or trucker attempts to pass without a clear view of the road up ahead. This can turn into a lethal head-on collision. Other reasons for a big rig crash with a passenger vehicle or light truck include:

  • Poor driver training: Because of the big rig driver shortage that’s been going on for some time, not all truckers are experienced in handling a semi. A driver with little experience behind the wheel can make errors that lead to a serious collision.
  • Unsecured or overloaded cargo: A badly loaded trailer means that the weight hasn’t been distributed evenly. When stopping, turning or going up a steep hill, the cargo can shift, resulting in a dangerous big rig crash.
  • Distracted driving: Truck drivers spend long hours on the road taking their cargo to its destination. This can result in boredom and lead to distraction. Texting, changing the radio station, daydreaming, and other distractions are common causes of all types of collisions.
  • Speeding: Truck drivers often have a timeframe in which to deliver their goods. In some cases, the trucker may speed to get there in time, especially if they end up stuck in traffic along the way.
  • Fatigue: Those long hours behind the wheel of a big rig can lead to fatigue. Some drivers stay awake long after they should and drive through bad weather to make their deliveries. Almost half of all accidents involving big trucks are attributed to fatigue.

Conducting an Investigation Into a Big Rig Crash

Truck drivers must follow state and federal regulations in addition to traffic laws. In some cases, the driver is an independent operator. In others, they rent a truck or work for a company. In addition, liability may point toward the driver, company, cargo loader, maintenance people or others.

This is why it’s important to ask for advice from a lawyer when you want to claim compensation for an injury. My legal team and I have successfully obtained compensation for many Northern Californians over the years. Our investigators:

  • Perform accident reconstruction
  • Check the driving record of the trucker to look for previous infractions
  • Examine the ELD or logbook to see if corners were cut or it was falsified
  • Look for surveillance cameras in the area that might have caught the accident on tape
  • Interview the witnesses to the big rig crash
  • Examine the police report for errors

Our injury attorneys take over once the evidence is gathered to construct a strong case that supports our client’s claim for compensation.
