Big Rig Crash Fatally Injures Stockton Man Near Ceres

I’m Ed Smith, a Stockton car accident lawyer. A serious trucking accident occurred near Ceres on the morning of Monday, November 27, 2017. The crash, unfortunately, caused one party to suffer fatal injuries.

We would like to extend our condolences to the friends and family of the party that passed away in this tragic, heart-wrenching accident.

What Happened?

A 51-year-old Stockton man was driving his 2004 Honda sedan southbound along Highway 99 in the vicinity of Whitmore Avenue at approximately 4:20 am. The man allegedly lost control of his vehicle and veered across the roadway. The Honda came to a rest facing north in the No. 2 lane of the highway, in the direct path of two oncoming big rigs. The tractor-trailers were unable to stop in time, resulting in a serious collision.

Stockton Man Suffers Fatal Injuries

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene of the truck accident. When they arrived, they located the injured driver of the Honda sedan. The driver was transported to the Doctors Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Identity of Victim Unknown

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim due to pending notification of next-of-kin.

What Caused the Accident?

The cause of the accident remains unknown as the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is currently investigating. A Traffic Collision Report by CHP may take up to two weeks be processed. Traffic reports may sometimes contain error pertaining to fault, leaving the loved ones of an injured or deceased party with many, unanswered questions. It is important to contact a Stockton personal injury lawyer when a party has suffered significant harm in an accident involving a large commercial truck. An experienced attorney will investigate the matter and study the sequence of events leading up to the crash to properly determine liability.

Truck Accident Statistics

Accidents involving large trucks occur more often than we think. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), approximately 3,852 parties passed away in truck accidents in 2015 alone. Fifteen percent of these fatalities were motorcyclists, pedestrians or bicyclists, 16 percent were truck occupants and 69 percent were occupants of passenger vehicles. Such accidents are usually caused by:

  • Inadequate truck training as to defensive driving, safety concerns and driver technique
  • Truck driver fatigue
  • Unrealistic expectations and schedules compiled by trucking companies that expect truck operators to deliver loads immediately, despite the safety risks involved

Large commercial trucks, such as delivery trucks or big rigs, oftentimes weigh twenty to thirty times as much as passenger vehicles. The height and greater ground clearance of large trucks may result in underride and override trucking accidents. Victims of trucking accidents tend to sustain traumatic, catastrophic or even fatal injuries due to the massive weight of large trucks. If you or someone you love has suffered serious harm in a truck accident, it is important to contact a Stockton personal injury lawyer to protect your rights and obtain fair compensation for your losses.
