Big Rig Accident Kills a Man and Woman on Jackson Highway

Two people died on December 3 when their vehicle crashed with a big rig along Jackson Highway. The accident occurred around 10:19 in the morning close to Sloughhouse Road, according to the report issued by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Witnesses said that a Honda sedan turned onto Jackson Highway from Eagles Nest Road as the tractor-trailer was moving east. The big rig crashed into the driver’s side of the Honda, which shoved it across Jackson Highway and off the roadway. The smaller vehicle ended up on the shoulder of the road, and both the female driver and a male passenger died in the crash. The semi driver was uninjured in the collision. The names of those who were killed have not yet been released, pending notification of family by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

Loss of a Loved One

Losing a loved one in an unexpected accident takes a toll on the family. News of the accident is met by grief, shock and a profound sense of disbelief. Suddenly, the world can become cold and empty, and family members are often overwhelmed. This is when they need the help of others more than ever. Some things to remember are:

  • Be there for grieving family members. Listen to what they say and don’t offer judgmental statements. Grief is different for everyone.
  • Don’t ask too many questions. Let them take the reins.
  • Offer to help with funeral arrangements.
  • Ask for a list of grocery items they may need or bring meals to the home.
  • Help with other chores such as cleaning up or taking children to school.
  • Offer to drive them to appointments.
  • Ask about things they may need from the pharmacy, such as prescription meds, and offer to pick them up.
  • Offer to take care of the family pet.

Wrongful Death Claims

When a loved one is killed tragically, the family is often unprepared for the financial loss that accompanies the person’s demise. While it will not bring the person back or ease your grief, it is possible to recover funeral and burial costs and the support the person would have provided. This is done by filing a wrongful death claim. Close family members such as a spouse, children, and stepchildren who live in the home can file a claim. It is important to talk to an attorney who can assume the burden of filing, making it easier for grieving family members.

What an Attorney Can Do to Help in a Big Rig Crash

Big rig accidents are often fatal for those in passenger vehicles. This puts an enormous strain on the family. Everyone at our firm empathizes with the sorrow you feel. It is important for the family to know why the crash happened. We dispatch our investigative team to the accident site to look for clues and use accident reconstruction techniques to determine fault. Our investigators also interview witnesses and use videos from various sources to document the accident visually. Police reports are reviewed for inaccuracies since they are widely used in insurance negotiations and in court. We also check trucker’s logs to make sure maintenance complies with regulations. Once our investigative team has accumulated this information necessary to build a strong case for our client, it is released to our legal team.
