Bicycle Accident on SR 126 Near Fillmore

Fillmore Bicycle Accident

A crash outside of Fillmore between a bicycle and car on Wednesday, May 17, caused injuries to the bike rider, who was taken for treatment to a hospital.

What Happened

The accident occurred along California State Route 126, also known as Telegraph Road, and the exit for Hopper Canyon Road when the driver of a Honda moved onto the shoulder of the road attempting to pass an 18-wheeler. The driver was reported to have kept going following the accident but went back to the crash site when authorities arrived at the scene. The bicyclist was thought to have suffered abrasions as a result. The collision remains under investigation by authorities.

Bicycle Accidents in Ventura County

Although Fillmore is generally a safe place to ride a bike, the rest of the county showed 202 bicycle accidents in 2014, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. Of the total of 4,117 accident victims injured or killed by motor vehicles that year, 1,035 of these crashes showed that speed was a factor, 290 occurred after dark and 162 were hit and runs.

Driver Responsibility With Bicyclists on the Road

When a driver abandons the duty of care to obey traffic laws, it can result in injuries to innocent people. The California Three Feet for Safety Act, which was passed in 2014, requires that a driver pass a bicycle from a distance that is a minimum of three feet away and that will not interfere with the safety of the biker or operation of his/her bike. This measure also includes passing a bicyclist on a highway. If an accident occurs because a driver causes bodily injury to a bicyclist, the driver is subject to a fine. Obviously, if the driver were to seriously injure or kill the bicyclist, the repercussions would be much more severe.
