Seeking Compensation in a Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accident

Cycling is an eco-friendly mode of transportation and a great form of exercise with many health benefits. However, riding a bicycle may come with its risks of injury. It takes only a split second of negligence on the part of a motorist to turn a situation into a life-changing event for a cyclist. Reckless or careless driving behaviors may endanger the lives of bicyclists and lead to crashes causing catastrophic injury or even death in some extreme cases. If driver negligence is the direct cause of a bicycle accident, the at-fault party may be held liable for the resulting losses through a personal injury claim.

Recovering compensation after a hit-and-run cycling crash may be possible. This is only if the injured bicyclist has uninsured motorist coverage on their auto insurance policy or lives with a family member who carries UM protection. In the latter, coverage may be extended to the injured party if they are not excluded from the insurance plan. In the meantime, it is essential to retain legal counsel that has the resources to work with a private investigator. The attorney will work diligently to identify the suspect driver and hold them liable for the resulting losses.

In the state of California, cases for personal injury are subject to a two-year statute of limitations. Two years may seem like ample time to bring a claim forward. However, time may pass quickly, and key evidence may be lost or destroyed if not preserved immediately. That is why it is recommended to retain legal counsel following a car versus bicycle accident.
