Motorcyclist Injured in Berkeley Hit-and-Run on I-80

A Berkeley hit-and-run incident was reported on May 22, 2024, at approximately 6:35 a.m. The incident occurred along the westbound I-80, just east of the University Boulevard off-ramp. Upon the arrival of California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers, they found a motorcyclist injured and lying in the number one lane.

The motorcycle was also found down, indicating a serious collision. Further investigation revealed that the motorcyclist had been involved in a crash with two vehicles. Information was not available on the extent of injuries the motorcyclist suffered in the Berkelely hit-and-run accident or whether they were treated on scene or transported to a hospital. Investigators with the CHP traffic crash unit are determining the accident’s cause and searching for the drivers who left the scene.

Motorcycle Collisions Involving Motor Vehicles

Despite the best efforts of most riders to avoid them, accidents are sometimes unavoidable. Motorcycle crashes can have devastating consequences, and drivers are often negligent in many of these accidents. Here are some common causes of motorcycle accidents:

  • Left-hand turns: A common cause of motorcycle crashes is passenger vehicles making left-hand turns in front of motorcyclists. This can happen at intersections or when a driver turns from a parking lot or side street.
  • Drunk or drugged driving: Impaired driving is another major cause of motorcycle crashes. Drunk drivers pose a significant danger as they often weave between lanes, making it challenging for motorcyclists to avoid collisions.
  • Rear-end collisions: Motorcyclists who are hit from the rear or by drivers who stop suddenly in front of them can be ejected from their bikes, leading to severe injuries such as broken bones and traumatic brain injuries.
  • Distracted driving: Drivers who are distracted by texting, adjusting the radio, or engaging in other activities that take their focus off the road are frequently responsible for motorcycle accidents.
  • Speeding: Speeding significantly increases the likelihood of a fatal motorcycle accident. Drivers who speed need more time and distance to come to a stop, which can result in catastrophic outcomes for motorcyclists.

Collecting Evidence to Support a Motorcycle Accident Injury Claim

To support a motorcycle accident claim after a Berkeley hit-and-run, a comprehensive investigation is essential. Your Grass Valley motorcycle accident lawyer will gather the necessary evidence to build a strong case. As with other personal injury damage cases, no fees are owed unless you win. The evidence-gathering process may include:

  • Site examination: Investigating the crash site for skid marks, pavement damage, and other physical evidence of the hit-and-run driver.
  • Traffic camera footage: Examining traffic cameras in the area for videos of the collision, which might contain video of the vehicle that fled.
  • Witness interviews: Speaking with witnesses to gather statements supporting the accident and to help identify the fleeing driver.
  • Accident reconstruction: Conducting an accident reconstruction to demonstrate how the collision happened.
  • Police report review: Checking the police report for any inaccuracies.

By meticulously collecting and analyzing these pieces of evidence, your lawyer can build a compelling case to support your motorcycle accident claim.
