Vallejo Man, American Canyon Woman Killed in Bay Area Collision

Two people lost their lives in a Bay Area collision that took place on Monday, December 16, 2019. On the following day, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department identified the decedents as a 52-year-old woman named Tyra Chappell of American Canyon and a 76-year-old man named Frederic “Mike” Chappell of Vallejo. In addition to the two decedents, one other person suffered injuries during the incident. According to hospital staff, the injured man was in stable condition as of Tuesday. California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports state that the crash involved two vehicles and happened on Highway Interstate 80 in Pinole. The collision remains under investigation at this time.

Crash Information

The accident occurred at around 11:40 p.m. Tyra and Frederic Chappell had been traveling in a 2000 Toyota pickup truck using the far right lane of the highway. At the same time, a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer entered the Appian Way off-ramp from the wrong direction. The two vehicles collided head-on, where the off-ramp meets the highway.

Emergency staff were sent out to the crash site right away. When they arrived, the driver of the Trailblazer was found with serious trauma and taken to a nearby hospital. Both Tyra and Frederic Chappell were also found with critical injuries. Tragically, both passed away on-scene. A GoFundMe page has been created by the family of Ms. Tyra and Mr. Frederic Chappell to help cover their funeral expenses.

Investigation

Police have stated that the Trailblazer was seen by officers driving recklessly before the accident happened. According to reports, the vehicle entered and exited the freeway multiple times before exiting at Appian Way and stopping inside of an intersection. While stopped at the intersection, a passenger exited the vehicle before the Trailblazer drove away. Police reportedly did not pursue the vehicle but stayed with the passenger. The accident took place about a minute after.

Freeway lanes were closed off at the site of the accident and remained closed until about 3:30 a.m. while response and initial investigations of the collision scene were conducted.
