Auto Accident Fatally Injures Man Near Escalon
I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto personal injury lawyer. A three-vehicle accident caused injuries to three parties and claimed the life of one near Escalon during the morning of June 2, 2018. The crash occurred shortly after 5:50 a.m. along Highway 120 in the vicinity of Sutliff Road where an eastbound GMC Yukon Denali veered into the westbound lane of travel. A westbound Subaru attempted to avoid the GMC in its path but was unsuccessful as the Ford pickup truck behind it struck the GMC head-on. The Subaru was clipped in the process but, fortunately, its driver escaped injuries in the serious collision. Emergency personnel transported the Ford driver via air ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of major injuries while the two passengers in the GMC were taken by ground ambulance to the hospital. Sadly, the driver of the GMC was declared deceased at the scene due to the severity of their sustained injuries.
I would like to send my thoughts and prayers to those mourning the loss of their loved one during this devastating time. My wishes for a speedy and full recovery go out to the individuals injured in this tragic accident.
The cause of the accident is not yet known as an investigation is underway by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Officials closed down Highway 120 in the area for nearly three hours as they investigated and crews cleared the road.
One of the most severe types of car accidents are those involving head-on collisions. These accidents have the potential to cause serious injuries and property damage due to the rate of speed traveled by each vehicle and area of impact. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, head-on collisions occur more frequently along rural roads with thirteen percent of traffic fatalities in comparison to seven percent on urban streets.
Injuries from Head-On Collisions
Some of the injuries that may ensue from a head-on collision are as follows:
- Bone fractures can be extremely painful and often require a long recovery. Fractures of the upper and lower extremities, spinal cord, pelvis, ribs and skull are common in head-on collisions.
- Head and brain injuries can occur in an accident when a person’s head comes into contact with the window, steering wheel or dashboard of the vehicle. These can include concussions, traumatic brain injury, skull fractures, internal bleeding or lacerations, all of which can require extensive rehabilitation.
- Soft tissue injuries are common in any type of accident. These injuries arise when the ligaments, tendons or muscles are torn or stretched due to blunt force trauma.
- When significant force is exerted to the spinal column, there is a chance of permanent loss of function or sensation in the lower extremities.
Why You Should Contact an Experienced Car Accident Lawyer
When faced with an injury or the death of a loved one due to a head-on collision, having a lawyer assisting you with obtaining fair compensation for your damages is crucial. A skilled attorney can investigate further into the accident by enlisting crash reconstruction experts in determining whether other factors played a role in the accident, such as poor roadway design or defective vehicle equipment.
