hit and run atwater

I’m Ed Smith, an Atwater personal injury and car accident lawyer. A 38-year-old Atwater man suffered life-threatening head injuries in a hit and run accident in Atwater on May 5, 2018. At approximately 6:00 in the morning, the man was driving his 2006 Ford Focus along the Atwater Boulevard on-ramp of Highway 99 south when his vehicle was rear-ended by a 2001 Honda Accord. The impact of the collision reportedly propelled the Ford onto the highway causing it to overturn several times. The Ford driver was transported to the Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment of major injuries. According to officials, the victim has not yet been released from hospitalization due to ongoing treatment.

Accident Investigation

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) received statements from witnesses at the scene indicating that the Honda driver fled the area on foot following the collision and left his crashed vehicle behind. The suspect was later apprehended and has been booked into the Merced County Jail on felony charges of hit and run and driving under the influence causing injury.

Head Injuries and Car Accidents

Any type of motor vehicle accident is capable of causing serious injuries that require medical treatment. One of the most common and most severe injuries are those involving trauma to the head. A head injury can range in severity from a concussion, epidural hematoma, and subdural hematoma to a traumatic brain injury. Although symptoms of a head injury may not immediately present themselves following a traumatic event, such as a traffic accident, it is important to recognize the signs. Examples of head trauma symptoms include:

  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Difficulties with coordination, concentration, memory or speech
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Numbness in the extremities
  • Personality changes
  • Sensitivity to bright light and sounds

The symptoms can last for weeks or even months, depending on the severity of head trauma. It is important to document all your symptoms with your medical provider to receive the most beneficial treatment for your needs.

How a Personal Injury Lawyer Can Help

Many complications and comorbidities can arise from a head injury such as chronic pain, depression, memory loss or challenges with motor function. These can lead to lifelong disabilities compounded by mounting medical bills and diminished earnings. If an individual suffers a head injury due to the negligence of a motorist or other entity, the injured party or their family may retrieve restitution for damages incurred.
