Arden Arcade Motorcycle Crash on Hurley Way

An Arden Arcade motorcycle crash on January 23 ended up in the hospitalization of the rider. The accident happened shortly after 5:00 in the afternoon at Hurley Way, east of Fulton Avenue between the motorcyclist and a Toyota Rav4. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a tow truck was required to remove the bike. The rider was found sitting on the right-hand side of the road. He was transported to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment and evaluation. It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a part in the collision.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics

The California Department of Motor Vehicles reports that there were 494 fatalities and 14,400 motorcyclist injuries reported in 2015. The number of fatalities represented more than 15 percent of the total deaths caused by traffic accidents. This increases the risk of an Arden Arcade motorcycle crash.

Causes of Arden Arcade Motorcycle Crashes

Motorists and motorcycle riders both contribute to accidents. For a rider, being visible is important and can help avoid an accident. Ways that motorcycle riders can be negligent and cause a crash with a motor vehicle include:

  • Unsafe lane splitting: California is the only state that permits this practice. However, the rider should never attempt lane splitting when traffic is moving more than 30 mph. The rider should also never move much faster than the traffic.
  • Alcohol and drug abuse: Riding a motorcycle while high on alcohol or drugs is a recipe for disaster. Staying off the roads or taking Uber is a better idea to avoid a motorcycle crash.
  • Speeding: Motorists and motorcycle riders alike are guilty of this traffic infraction. Driving above the speed limit increases the risk of a collision. It also amplifies the risk of a fatality.
  • Riding too powerful a bike: Skill level and engine size are important factors when choosing a motorcycle. Riders with powerful bikes that lack the skills necessary to operate them risk a  motorcycle crash, which can injure both the rider and any passengers.

Motorists Who Cause Crashes With Motorcycles

Motorists are found to be at fault in about 66 percent of collisions that occur with motorcycles. In most of these accidents, they are found to have violated the right of way of the rider. This can happen in the following ways:

  • Left turns: Making an unsafe left turn in front of a motorcyclist is the main cause of a traffic accident. Because the motorcyclist cannot stop in time, he or she risks being thrown from the bike in a collision. This results in severe trauma such as brain injuries or spinal cord damage.
  • Rear-end collisions: A motorist who cannot stop in time to avoid an accident is guilty of tailgating, a form of reckless driving.
  • Head-on collisions: Unsafe passing and trying to cut off a turning motorcycle in an intersection can lead to a motorcycle crash.

Help After an Arden Arcade Motorcycle Accident

Juries can be biased against a motorcycle rider. This is why it is important to find a motorcycle accident lawyer who can uphold your rights to compensation. Educating the jury and building a strong case are ways a lawyer can help.
