Fatal Crash in Amador County

A tragic crash took place along Highway 16 involving a big rig and a vehicle on Saturday, October 1, 2016. The head-on collision caused the death of one of the drivers.

What Happened?

A vehicle was driving in the westbound lane along Highway 16. The vehicle was identified as a Scion sport package vehicle. For unknown reasons, the motorist veered their Scion right into the eastbound lane of travel. According to an official from the California Highway Patrol, the Scion made head-on contact with a tandem hay truck in the vicinity of Latrobe Road. The impact of the collision caused both of the vehicles to catch on fire. The fire destroyed both vehicles. Authorities shut down Highway 16 between Old Sacramento Road and Latrobe Road to clean up and investigate and reopened the highway several hours later.

Scion Driver Fatally Injured

Sadly, the driver of the Scion passed away at the scene. The tandem hay truck driver escaped the fiery crash without injury. There were no other parties injured in the accident.

What Caused the Accident?

It is still too soon to know for sure. It typically takes a week or two for the investigating authorities to prepare a traffic collision report. The report usually contains their findings as to liability (fault). Sometimes police reports can be inconclusive or in error. It is important to contact an experienced accident attorney who can perform an independent investigation into the cause of the collision. An experienced attorney can determine if distracted driving, driving under the influence of other factors like excessive speed may have contributed to a crash.
