OAKDALE, CA – Early Thursday morning in Oakdale, a devastating crash on River Road left several young passengers injured and led to the arrest of a Modesto man, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Shortly before 1 a.m., officers responded to reports of a serious collision just east of Cleveland Avenue. When they arrived, they found two vehicles heavily damaged from a head-on impact.
The 17-year-old driving a Kia SUV suffered minor injuries, CHP said. Three passengers were traveling with the teen, and two of them were rushed by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center with major injuries. Their conditions have not yet been updated.
Investigators say a 52-year-old man driving a Mercedes was heading westbound when he lost control, crossed into oncoming traffic, and struck the Kia head-on. Authorities reported that the driver ran from the scene on foot and was later picked up by a family member who brought him back to his Modesto home.
CHP officers later located and arrested him. They noted he showed clear signs of intoxication and placed him into custody at the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and felony DUI, as well as driving with a suspended license. Officials also stated he had an outstanding warrant at the time of the crash.
The incident remains under investigation, and officials have not released further details.
