Accidents November 10

MODESTO, CA – A man has been found guilty in connection with a heartbreaking hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of an 18-month-old boy.

According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded to the incident on Glenn Avenue, east of Ustick Road, around 5:06 p.m. on May 21, 2021. Investigators said that the young child had wandered from the north shoulder onto the roadway when he was struck by a westbound Toyota sedan.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as 19-year-old Santiago Martinez of Modesto, continued driving after the collision, authorities said. Witnesses followed the vehicle for about a mile before making contact with Martinez, who then returned to the scene, where he was taken into custody for hit-and-run.

The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office shared that the child’s father immediately tried to help his son following the crash. The toddler was transported to a nearby hospital but sadly did not survive.

Now 24, Martinez was convicted on Wednesday of felony hit-and-run. He is scheduled to be sentenced on November 21.

MANTECA, CA – Five people were injured — four of whom were taken to the hospital — following a serious collision involving a motorcycle, van, and SUV at the intersection of Main Street and Edison Street in Manteca late Thursday morning, authorities said.

Police said they were called to the scene around 11:30 a.m. after reports of a crash involving multiple vehicles. According to officers, a van traveling south on South Main Street attempted to turn left onto Edison Street when a motorcycle collided with it.

The impact pushed the van into an SUV that had been stopped at the westbound stop sign on East Edison Street.

Both people on the motorcycle were transported to a nearby hospital with what police described as serious injuries. Officers noted that both riders were wearing helmets and were conscious at the scene.

The driver and passenger in the van were also taken to the hospital for evaluation after reporting pain, while the driver of the SUV experienced soreness but did not require hospitalization.

Police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

MANTECA, CA – The Manteca Police Department is investigating a serious collision involving a van, a motorcycle, and an SUV that occurred Thursday morning at the intersection of North Main Street and Edison Street.

According to the department’s Major Accident Investigation Team, the crash began when a van collided with a motorcycle, causing both the rider and passenger to be ejected. The impact also pushed the van into an SUV that had been stopped at the westbound stop sign on East Edison Street.

Police said both people on the motorcycle — a man and a woman — were transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Officers noted that both were wearing helmets and were conscious at the scene.

The driver and passenger of the van, both in their 50s, were also taken to the hospital after reporting pain. The driver of the SUV, a man whose age has not been released, complained of pain to his head but did not require hospitalization, according to police.

Investigators said the crash occurred around 11:31 a.m., when the van, traveling south on North Main Street, made a left turn at the intersection of Main and Edison streets. The northbound motorcycle then collided with the van, leading to the chain reaction involving the SUV.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details are expected as police continue to review evidence and witness statements.

SONORA, CA — The Sonora Police Department is investigating two separate injury crashes that occurred Thursday afternoon — one involving a motorcycle and the other a pedestrian.

The first collision happened around 3:34 p.m. on East Lyons Street, just north of Hope Lane. According to police, the rider of a westbound 2014 Harley-Davidson motorcycle attempted to pass a 2017 Ford F-150 pickup as the truck turned into a private driveway across the eastbound lane. The motorcycle and pickup collided, and the rider sustained minor injuries.

The second crash occurred at approximately 5:20 p.m. on Highway 49/Stockton Street near Southgate Drive. Police said a 2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer traveling eastbound struck a 16-year-old pedestrian who was walking in the crosswalk. The teen suffered major but non-life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment.

Investigators said that neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have been factors in either incident. Both collisions remain under investigation.
