STOCKTON, CA — A family in Stockton is living through an agonizing trauma, and holding onto hope as they wait for their mother to regain consciousness after a devastating hit-and-run.

According to Stockton police, the crash happened shortly after midnight on April 20 near Hammer Lane and Etna Street. Officers responded to reports of a hit-and-run involving a bicyclist and arrived to find a woman lying in the roadway.

The injured woman’s daughter shared that her mother had been crossing the street when a vehicle struck her and then drove away. The impact threw her from her bicycle, leaving her with a severe traumatic brain injury. She was rushed to San Joaquin General Hospital, where she remains in a coma.

Police later identified and arrested a suspected driver. However, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said Friday that the individual is no longer in custody. Court records show she is expected to appear on June 2 for further arraignment, and documents indicate the case is being handled as a DUI.

The injured woman, a mother of four, was hurt just days before her 50th birthday on May 4—making this painful time even more difficult for her loved ones.

PATTERSON, CA — Two people were injured Friday morning when a big rig crashed and overturned on Interstate 5 near Patterson, creating a dangerous situation that forced the freeway to close for several hours, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported just before 10 a.m. on southbound I-5, north of Sperry Avenue. Investigators say that, for reasons still unknown, the driver of the Freightliner veered left into the center median and was unable to regain control of the truck.

The 58-year-old driver sustained minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center. A 43-year-old passenger, who had been resting in the sleeper compartment at the time, as more seriously hurt and had to be airlifted to a hospital for urgent care.

Because the trailer was carrying refrigerated liquid hydrogen, a hazardous materials team was called in after witnesses reported smelling what seemed to be leaking gas, adding to the concern at the scene.

Traffic in both directions came to a halt as crews worked to manage the situation and ensure safety. Southbound lanes were able to reopen around 1:25 p.m., while northbound traffic didn’t resume until about 4:30 p.m., after authorities determined it was safe to do so.

ATWATER, CA – A North Valley community is grieving after the heartbreaking loss of a ten year-old boy who was riding a bicycle when he was killed after colliding with a truck Thursday evening in Atwater.

According to Atwater Police, the crash occurred at the intersection of Oriole Way and Bridgewater Street. Neighbors who saw what happened rushed to the boy’s side, doing what they could to help before first responders arrived.

One witness described how quickly it all unfolded—hearing a loud crash and immediately calling 911. When officers reached the scene, they found the boy critically injured. First responders worked to save him there before he was taken to the hospital.

The tragedy has left a heavy weight on the neighborhood. By Friday morning, pieces of yellow police tape still marked the area as investigators continued trying to understand exactly what led to the crash.

HUGHSON, CA – Four people were injured Saturday morning in a serious collision in Hughson, an incident authorities say stemmed from unsafe passing and turning.

The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. on Hatch Road, just east of Clinton Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. When officers arrived, they found both vehicles—a white 2017 Hyundai sedan and a white 2021 Mercedes AMG SUV—resting along the south shoulder.

Investigators believe the Hyundai’s driver had been traveling westbound in the left-turn lane while attempting to pass another vehicle. At the same time, the Mercedes was heading eastbound at about 55 mph. For reasons still being reviewed, the Hyundai turned left into the oncoming lane, leading to a head-on collision.

The Hyundai’s driver, a 22-year-old Hickman man, suffered major injuries. His two passengers, a 25-year-old and a 24-year-old, both from Modesto, were also seriously hurt. Authorities said one passenger was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected during the crash.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 55-year-old of Hughson, was the only person in that vehicle and sustained minor injuries.

All four individuals were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Investigators noted that alcohol or drugs do not appear to have played a role in the crash.

MODESTO, CA — A life was lost Saturday night after a tragic multi-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on Hatch Road in Modesto, according to the Modesto Police Department.

The incident happened a little before 9:00 p.m. along Hatch Road between Ustick Road and Dallas Street. Officers acted to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and, upon arrival, found the individual had been struck in the roadway.

Early information suggests the pedestrian was walking in the road when they were hit by multiple vehicles. Police said the first vehicles involved stayed at the scene, while investigators believe a third vehicle may also have been part of the incident.

Despite the response from emergency crews, the pedestrian died from their injuries. Authorities have not yet released their identity.

The Modesto Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit is continuing to investigate and follow leads as they work to understand exactly what happened. The case remains active and under review.
