STOCKTON, CA – A tragic collision Thursday evening claimed the life of one pedestrian and left another injured, according to Stockton officials.
Stockton police said officers came upon the scene near North El Dorado and E Acacia streets around 7:20 p.m., where a vehicle had struck two adult men. Both pedestrians, age 68, were taken to a local hospital. One man is currently receiving treatment for his injuries, while the other later died as a result of the crash. His name has not yet been released.
Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi substantiated that the driver involved was a city employee, Stockton’s City Manager. The Mayor stated that the employee has been fully cooperative with investigators.
Police said the driver remained at the scene and assisted with the investigation. Authorities noted that alcohol does not appear to have played a role in the collision and that the area did not have a marked crosswalk.
In an update on Sunday, the police department said the tragic accident was not the fault of the city employee.

TRACY, CA – A driver was fortunate to escape with relatively minor injuries following a serious crash in San Joaquin County early Wednesday morning, where their vehicle became wedged beneath a big rig trailer.
The collision occurred around 7:00 in the early morning near Vernalis and Koster roads, just southeast of Tracy. Crews from the South San Joaquin County Fire Authority arrived to find a Toyota Prius trapped underneath a semi-truck trailer.
Firefighters quickly shifted into extrication mode and were able to carefully free the driver within about 10 minutes. While the driver’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, they were taken to a hospital as a precaution for further evaluation.

MERCED, CA – A heartrending collision early Friday morning in Merced County resulted in the death of a horse after a vehicle traveling through exceptionally heavy fog struck the animal, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials said visibility was limited to about 50 feet as dense fog covered Bloss Road. The vehicle was traveling at approximately 50 miles per hour when the driver suddenly encountered two horses standing in the roadway. With very little time to react in the poor visibility, the vehicle struck one of the animals.
The horse suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. Fortunately, the second horse did not sustain injuries.
Authorities said the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of driving in fog, especially in rural areas where animals, pedestrians, stalled vehicles, or debris can appear without warning. CHP urged drivers to slow down to match visibility conditions, use low-beam headlights, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking or swerving, noting that high beams can actually worsen visibility by reflecting off the fog.

MERCED COUNTY, CA — In an effort to enhance public safety, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is asking for the community’s assistance in identifying the rider of a dirt bike who fled from a traffic stop earlier this month in Merced County.
According to CHP’s Merced Area office, the incident occurred on January 15 at approximately 5:04 p.m. A sergeant of the Central Division was traveling north on Buhach Road when he witnessed a red dirt-bike bearing a black number “4” moving southward. When the sergeant tried to initiate a traffic stop using lights and siren, the rider suddenly made a U-turn and fled, escaping into the McSwain area.
CHP is asking anyone who perhaps recognizes the dirt-bike or knows anything about the rider or bike owner to come forward. Tips can be shared with the California Highway Patrol Merced Area Office at (209) 356-6600.
Officials stressed that dirt-bikes are not legal for street driving, and that riding them on streets creates serious safety concerns due to the heightened risk of severe injury in a collision.
Authorities also stressed that fleeing from law enforcement significantly increases the danger for the rider, other drivers, and nearby residents. CHP said it has received several complaints about unlawful dirt-bike use in the area and will remain vigilant with the goal of preventing serious injuries and protecting the community.
