Evenity is a New Drug That Can Prevent Femur Fractures

Evenity, which is the brand name for the drug romosozumab, is a new drug developed by Amgen that has been shown to prevent broken bones, such as femur fractures, in certain at-risk groups. There have been multiple news articles published proclaiming its effectiveness at preventing broken bones in women of post-menopausal age who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. This specific patient population is at significant risk of suffering bone fractures which might lead to serious complications. According to research studies, Evenity has the potential to prevent these breaks.

According to the executive vice president of Research and Development with the Amgen corporation, women who have osteoporosis who suffer a fracture are five times more likely to sustain a subsequent bone fracture in the following year. Evenity has the potential to prevent these fractures from happening, drastically improving someone’s quality of life.

How Does Evenity Work?

Evenity is a class of drug called a monoclonal antibody. That means that this drug is specifically targeted to inhibit the action of a certain protein. In this case, the drug works by blocking a protein called sclerostin. This protein has been implicated in the reduction of bone formation in women of menopausal age, particularly those with osteoporosis. By inhibiting the activity of this protein, important bone cells are spared.

By taking Evenity, the action of sclerostin slows. As a result, bone density begins to increase. This leads to stronger bones that are able to resist fractures. Multiple clinical trials have been performed demonstrating the effectiveness of Evenity.

Efficacy Has Been Proven in Research Studies

Researchers conducted a study called FRAME, which stands for Fracture study in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. In this study, more than 7,000 postmenopausal women who had been diagnosed with osteoporosis were included. The study compared the performance of Evenity against a placebo. The study team followed the patients every month for a year. The results of this study showed that the drug was effective at reducing the rate of fractures in this patient population.

Other studies conducted using this drug include ARCH and BRIDGE. These last two studies were expanded to a wider patient population, demonstrating its effectiveness in preventing different types of fractures. One of these studies included men. Both studies tracked a variety of fractures, including femur fractures, vertebral fractures, among others. All of these studies showed that this medication can be effective in preventing broken bones.

The Risk of Osteoporosis

This drug has been specifically designed to treat individuals who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis because those who have been diagnosed with this disease are at a major risk of suffering a bone fracture. According to the researchers, about a third of women and a fifth of men over the age of 50 will suffer a bone fracture due to osteoporosis. This includes major injuries including a femur fracture

The average age of the population is rising, meaning that there will be more fractures in the future. Even though this risk is increasing, medical research is still lagging behind. Furthermore, many individuals with osteoporosis suffer a delay in diagnosis and treatment, increasing the risk of complications developing. The research team seeks to close this gap by developing Evenity.

The Risks of Taking Evenity

It is important for everyone to know that if they have a history of heart attacks, strokes, or other blood clotting disorders, they should not take Evenity. Individuals who are interested in taking this medication should consult with their doctor to learn more. After 12 months, the effectiveness of this drug will begin to wane. Therefore, it is vital for people to track their doses carefully and switch to a new medication when indicated. Consult a medical professional before taking this medication.
