Road Construction Worker Killed in Suspected DUI Crash on Highway 50 in Sacramento

A road construction worker killed in suspected DUI crash on Highway 50 in Sacramento lost his life early Monday morning when an alleged drunk driver breached a closed work zone on U.S. Highway 50 in Sacramento, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Fatal Crash in Active Highway Work Zone

A deadly collision occurred around 12:39 a.m. on Monday on an elevated stretch of eastbound Highway 50 near the Stockton Boulevard overpass.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that road construction crews were actively working inside a closed lane and on the shoulder when a Honda sedan breached the coned-off work zone and collided with a construction vehicle.

Construction Worker Struck and Knocked From Overpass

According to officials, Bay Line Cutting and Coring—a San Francisco subcontractor hired by a primary Caltrans contractor—was performing roadwork near the transition from the northbound Highway 99 ramp to eastbound Highway 50.

A site foreman explained that the Honda initially crashed into a truck parked specifically to shield workers from traffic. The car then pushed forward, striking a crew member directly and knocking him off the elevated freeway down onto Stockton Boulevard below.

Emergency responders pronounced the worker dead at the scene.

Suspected DUI Driver Apprehended After Second Collision

The California Highway Patrol reported that the female Honda driver, believed to be in her 20s, fled the scene of the fatal crash and subsequently caused a second collision further down Highway 50.

Officers tracked down and arrested the driver shortly afterward, with investigators stating that alcohol appears to have played a role in both incidents.

All eastbound lanes of Highway 50 and Stockton Boulevard remained closed for several hours while CHP officers investigated the scene. The roadway reopened shortly before 6:00 a.m.

The identity of the deceased worker has not been released.
