Fatal Fiery Crash on Highway 20 Near Lytle Road Claims at Least One Life

At least one person was killed in a fatal fiery crash on Highway 20 near Lytle Road late Sunday night, August 2, 2026, near the intersection west of Yuba City, according to emergency dispatch reports.

Vehicle Leaves Roadway and Catches Fire

The collision was reported at approximately 10:59 p.m. after an unknown four-door sedan reportedly swerved off the roadway, entered an orchard, and struck a tree.

A short time later, the vehicle caught fire, prompting a response from fire personnel. Dispatch records indicated the car was at one point resting on its side, and no occupants were initially visible outside the vehicle.

A responding unit later advised that a person remained inside the vehicle as it became fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, while a nearby farmer reportedly attempted to assist by directing irrigation water toward the burning vehicle.

Coroner Requested to the Scene

The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office was notified, and the county coroner was requested, confirming that the collision resulted in at least one fatality.

Westbound traffic on Highway 20 was diverted onto South Butte Road while emergency crews remained at the scene. A tow truck was later requested to remove the destroyed vehicle after the fire was extinguished.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.

Investigation Ongoing

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash and the subsequent vehicle fire. The cause of the collision has not yet been determined.
