MERCED COUNTY, CA — A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded late Thursday night as a 60-year-old bicyclist from Hilmar lost his life in a collision along Bloss Avenue, just east of Golf Link Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The incident occurred around 11:20 p.m. on September 11. Responding to an emergency call, officers from CHP’s Merced Area Office arrived at the scene to find that the cyclist had tragically passed away from his injuries before help could arrive.
According to the initial findings, the man had been riding westbound along Bloss Avenue in a dimly lit area. He was using a small red flashing light on the rear of his bike and a modest flashlight in the front to help remain visible in the darkness. At the same time, a 16-year-old driver from Stevinson was also traveling westbound in a 2015 Infiniti Q50, reportedly going about 60 miles per hour.
For reasons still under careful investigation, the young driver did not see the cyclist in time and struck him from behind. The impact threw the man from his bicycle, and he came to rest along the north shoulder of the roadway, where he suffered fatal injuries.
The teen driver stopped immediately, called 911, and remained at the scene, fully cooperating with authorities. Investigators have confirmed that impairment was not a factor in the crash.
The California Highway Patrol continues to look into the circumstances surrounding this devastating loss. Our hearts go out to the loved ones of the bicyclist who lost his life. And we commend the young driver for remaining at the scene and cooperating with officials.
