TUOLUMNE COUNTY, CA — Tragedy struck Wednesday evening in the Sonora area of Tuolumne County, where a devastating car accident claimed the lives of four individuals and left another person injured, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred at approximately 5:54 p.m. at the intersection of Shaws Flat Road and Highway 49. Authorities report that a Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by a 56-year-old man from Puerto Rico, initially stopped at the intersection but then, for reasons still unknown, moved into the path of an oncoming pickup truck traveling northbound at about 60 mph. The pickup was driven by an 18-year-old man from Jamestown.

The impact of the crash was severe, causing the Jeep to be forcefully pushed northwest, ultimately coming to rest on the west shoulder of Highway 49. Heartbreakingly, the driver of the Jeep and all three of his passengers lost their lives in the collision.

The young driver of the pickup truck sustained moderate to serious injuries and was transported for medical care. At this time, investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident.
