Elderly Man Killed in Rollover Crash on Highway 273 in Shasta County

A tragic two-vehicle incident claimed the life of an elderly man early Monday, June 23, 2025, in rollover crash on Highway 273 near Whitehouse Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The incident happened just after 6:15 a.m., prompting a swift response from emergency services, including CAL FIRE and medical crews.

Details of the Collision

Officers arrived to find two heavily damaged vehicles: a red Chevrolet pickup and a white Ford Ranger, both with flat front tires. The elderly driver of the red Chevrolet was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, with assistance from the Shasta County Coroner.

The female driver of the Ford Ranger was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. CHP confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in the collision.

Preliminary Investigation Points to Failure to Yield

According to CHP’s preliminary findings, failure to yield by the driver of the red Chevrolet appears to be the cause of the crash. Investigators believe the pickup pulled into the path of the oncoming Ford Ranger.

A CHP officer at the scene noted that if the individuals had seen the white truck, they would have ideally waited for it to pass. Unfortunately, they ended up pulling out in front of the truck.

Both vehicles were towed as evidence, and the investigation remains ongoing. Traffic was reduced to one lane for several hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage.

Determining Liability in Fatal Traffic Collisions

Determining liability in fatal collisions like this can be complex. However, California law allows for negligence to be established based on several contributing factors, including:

  • Failure to yield or follow traffic laws
  • Distracted driving
  • Reckless or aggressive driving behaviors
  • Failure to maintain vehicle safety
  • Driving under the influence (if applicable)
