Overcoming Insurance Company Challenges in Wildfire Loss Claims

California wildfires have grown markedly more severe and destructive in recent years, creating serious challenges for the state’s environment, economy, and public safety. Over the past decade, both the frequency and intensity of these fires have surged, resulting in unprecedented levels of damage.

Root Causes and Aggravating Factors of California Wildfires

Research indicates a strong connection between climate change and the rise in California wildfires. From 1979 to 2020, rising surface temperatures accounted for 80% of the increase in vapor pressure deficit (VPD), a key indicator of atmospheric dryness that fuels wildfire risk. This heightened VPD has played a major role in the escalating frequency and severity of wildfires. The growing intensity of wildfires is driven by several contributing factors, including:

• Climate Change: Human-caused climate change is responsible for nearly all the increase in burned areas over the last 50 years. Rising temperatures and greater dryness have created ideal conditions for fires to start and spread rapidly.
• Geography and Vegetation: California’s varied landscape, including slopes, canyons, and valleys, helps wildfires spread quickly, especially as heat rises upslope. The state’s abundant, highly flammable vegetation also acts as fuel for these fires.
• Urban Expansion: More people living near wildlands in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) has increased wildfire risks and potential impacts on communities.
