Two Children Injured by Hit-and-Run Driver Near Atwater

I’m Ed Smith, an Atwater personal injury attorney. Two children were playing in the parking lot of an apartment complex near Atwater recently. The children were struck by a vehicle backing up out of a parking space. Unfortunately, the motorist fled the scene following the crash, leaving the children to suffer from their injuries.

What Happened?

A 23-year-old Atwater woman was behind the wheel of her 1995 Honda Civic in an apartment complex along the 2600 block of Atwater Boulevard. She was reversing her vehicle out of a parking space when her vehicle collided with two children. The woman left the scene and returned a short time later after she was contacted by a family member.

Were the Children Injured?

The accident caused a 2-year-old girl to suffer a leg injury and a 4-year-old boy to suffer injuries to his arm, back and head. The boy was transported via air ambulance to a Fresno hospital and the girl was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Merced. The condition of the two children has not yet been updated.

We would like to wish for a speedy and full recovery for the two children injured in this devastating hit-and-run accident.

Authorities Detain Hit-and-Run Driver

Officers from the Atwater Police Department responded to the scene of the hit-and-run accident around 5:00 pm. Officials investigated the accident scene upon arrival. When the woman returned to the area, she was questioned by investigators. The woman made a statement acknowledging she had reversed her vehicle into the young children and an apology for the consequences of her actions. The woman was detained and booked into the Merced County Jail on charges of hit-and-run resulting in injury and driving infraction.

Injuries to Children in Car Accidents

Children are more susceptible to serious injuries in an accidents than adults due to their premature size and development. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the most common injuries sustained by children in motor vehicle accidents were head injuries. The NHTSA also found that cerebrum injuries were the most common type of head injuries among all children in the study. The path to recovery from head injuries can be lengthy and extensive, especially for young children. Although neurological symptoms from head trauma may not present themselves in children for many years, it is important to monitor such symptoms closely through medical attention.
