Big Rig Causes SUV Rollover at Fruitridge Road Intersection

An intersection accident in Sacramento on March 19 occurred when a big rig reportedly ran into an SUV. The three-vehicle accident happened at the intersection of Fruitridge Road and South Watt Avenue around 4:32 in the afternoon, blocking the roadway. According to authorities with the Sacramento Police Department, the crash between the big rig and SUV caused the smaller vehicle to strike the curb and then overturn onto its side.

Intersection Accident Under Investigation to Determine the Cause

No additional information was added regarding the third vehicle reportedly involved in the crash. The intersection remained blocked while authorities conducted an investigation, and the site was cleared. At the time of this report, the extent of injuries to those involved had not yet been released.

Collisions Involving a Big Rig

Traumatic injuries and fatalities often occur when a passenger vehicle is involved in a collision with a big rig. Although most of these crashes happen on highways, an intersection accident or one on a rural road can occur too. When a big rig caused your injuries in a crash, you may be able to obtain the compensation that you deserve with the help of an experienced injury attorney. We’ve helped many people get compensation and may be able to help you too.

Reasons for an Intersection Accident With a Big Rig

Big rigs are large, heavy and bulky, which makes it difficult for a driver to negotiate an intersection safely. Some of the reasons a big rig intersection accident can happen include:

  • The truck driver is speeding: Speeding is dangerous for any vehicle but even more so for a big rig. Because they require a much longer stopping distance and time to do so, speeding can easily lead to an intersection accident.
  • Making a turn: Since big rigs are so large, part of the truck frequently swings into the next lane in order for the driver to make a turn at an intersection. This can end up causing a collision with vehicles in the adjacent lane.
  • Overloading or badly loading the truck: The cargo in a tractor-trailer has to be carefully loaded to avoid it becoming unbalanced, especially while turning. If not, the rig can experience a rollover, impacting other vehicles.
  • Running a red light or stop sign: A truck can be guilty of this traffic offense just like drivers of passenger vehicles. Unfortunately, it can result in a serious intersection accident.

Rollover Crashes in an Intersection Accident

Although any vehicle can experience a rollover, another one of the most dangerous types of accidents, they are most common in SUVs, vans, and light trucks. This is because the center of gravity in these vehicles is higher. Those inside the vehicle can be tossed around, and seat belts can break, which increases the risk of traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, broken bones, and other types of trauma.

Roof Crush Dangers in a Rollover

One of the dangers in a rollover is roof crush, where the weight of the vehicle causes the top to cave in. Although manufacturers are held to standards with regard to the integrity and strength of the supports for a vehicle roof, not all of them comply.

This is one of the reasons it is so important that a vehicle be retained as evidence following an intersection accident, so the car or truck can be checked for this auto defect. If the roof caved in and caused injuries, the manufacturer of the vehicle may be held liable through an auto product liability lawsuit.
