Napa Bicycle Collision Injures Child

Authorities of the Napa Police Department (NPD) stated that a 12-year-old child suffered major injuries during a vehicle/bicycle accident on Thursday, May 9, 2019. Reports indicated that the child, identified as Napa resident Nicolas Halstead, suffered major injuries and was flown to a hospital in Oakland to receive medical care. An update released by hospital staff on Friday indicated that Halstead is expected to make a full recovery.

Crash Details

The accident happened at 4:40 p.m. in Napa on Kansas Avenue to the west of the intersection at Soscol Avenue not far from the entrance of South Napa Marketplace. A driver had been traveling in a pickup and was turning into the center of the road when he struck Halstead, who had been riding his bike. Halstead was knocked off of his bicycle during the accident. The pickup driver reportedly remained at the scene and cooperated with responders.

Response

Emergency staff was immediately dispatched to respond to the accident. Officers arriving at the crash location found Halstead had suffered serious injuries including a broken hip as well as a concussion and other various minor injuries. Police called for an air ambulance and had Halstead transported to the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland for urgent care.

Investigation

NPD officers are investigating this accident in order to determine the factors that caused it to happen. Police haven’t yet reported what causes they suspect could have been involved. Vehicle/bicycle accidents can cause serious injuries and are frequently caused by various factors such as defective bicycle parts, distracted drivers, reckless driving behaviors, medical issues, hazardous roads, and more.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

Concussions and other traumatic brain injuries can have serious consequences for accident survivors. Injuries that affect the brain can cause a wide variety of symptoms that range from headaches to seizures and mobility issues. These injury symptoms often make it difficult for accident survivors to return to their normal lives, and many face a long, difficult road to recovering their health.

Because brain injuries can affect people both physically and mentally, sustaining one can mean needing to take time away from work or school as well as abstaining from activities that you used to enjoy. Not only can this lead to lost income and difficulty completing coursework, but no longer being able to engage in normal life can cause secondary mental issues such as anxiety and depression.

Because these issues can cause serious issues in people’s lives, accident survivors can often claim compensation for their injuries from the parties responsible for the accident by filing a personal injury claim. By pursuing an injury claim, accident survivors can recover compensation for losses such as hospital expenses, medication costs, quality-of-life damages, and more.
