Seeking Medical Attention After a Crash is Highly Important

The NHTSA reports that an average of more than 3,000,000 people are injured in US car accidents every year. After being involved in a crash, people often walk away without receiving medical attention. However, in many cases, these people have suffered injuries that they simply haven’t noticed. This can happen when adrenaline blocks crash survivors from feeling the effects of their trauma or when an injury develops symptoms over a long period of time.

When people fail to notice that they have been injured in an accident, the injury often worsens over time. In other cases, the injury can cause secondary trauma by putting crash survivors in dangerous situations.

What Injuries Might Not Show Up Right Away?

  • Abdominal injuries can damage your internal organs, including your stomach, liver, spleen, and intestines. This can cause hemorrhaging and other serious issues that may not show up for a period of time after the accident takes place. Swelling or pain in your abdomen may indicate a serious injury. Because these injuries can be life-threatening, you should always seek immediate medical attention if you believe you’ve suffered serious abdominal trauma.
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries can have very delayed symptoms. In some cases, symptoms don’t fully develop until months after the accident happens. Symptoms related to these injuries include sleep issues, fatigue, vomiting, headaches, nausea, confusion, dizziness, and more.
  • Cervical Sprains often take a while to develop symptoms of weakness, numbness, or tingling in the arms as well as stiffness and/or pain in the neck, muscle spasms, and increased anxiety.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder – After a car accident, it’s common for people to experience sleeplessness, recurring nightmares, depression, anxiety, and other psychological issues. In some cases, crash survivors even develop a fear of vehicles or going outside. These issues can be related to mental trauma from car accidents.
  • Back Injuries are very common in car accidents and can also take a while to fully develop symptoms. These injuries can cause chronic pain that dramatically affects your life.

Medical Screening and Injury Claims

Seeking medical attention after an accident is extremely important. However, getting a check-up after a crash is also often a deciding factor in injury claims. With delayed onset injuries, it may be difficult to prove that your injury happened during the accident. However, if you tell your physician that you were in a crash, they will be able to check and see if you were injured during the incident. Later on, if you decide to file an injury claim, your doctor’s diagnoses can be a critical piece of evidence.

Recovering from an Injury

Recovering from a car accident injury can be very difficult for a number of reasons. Not only is the physical process of recovery itself often painful and mentally stressful, but paying for the necessary medical procedures, medications, and therapy can seem impossible. Furthermore, many injured people aren’t able to continue working and suffer a major loss of income as a result.

In order to recover from these losses, crash survivors can file injury claims against negligent parties. Through filing such a claim, people are often able to recover the full amount that they are owed for all of their financial and personal losses.
