Pickup Hits Guardrail and Causes Major injuries

A solo vehicle crash in North Highlands along southbound Fulton Avenue resulted in a major injury on January 29. The report of the accident by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the incident occurred at 12:37 in the afternoon just south of Marconi Avenue. A black and white Ford F-350 pickup struck a guardrail after it drifted off the roadway and then crashed into the center divider. Emergency responders with the Sacramento Fire Department arrived at the scene to assess injuries, and at least one person was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and further evaluation. A tow truck removed the pickup, which was said to have sustained major front-end damage. A call was made to Caltrans to send workmen to replace the attenuator in the center divide, which was heavily damaged. The CHP is investigating to see what caused the solo vehicle crash.

Solo Vehicle Crash

Solo vehicle accidents happen frequently and are caused by a variety of reasons. There are different types of single-vehicle accidents, such as rollover or run-off-road crashes and collisions with animals or debris. Usually, the designation as a solo vehicle crash is not used unless only the motor vehicle operator or the occupants of the vehicle are injured. Others, such as when a pedestrian or a bicyclist is struck, the accident is not classified as a solo vehicle crash.

Reasons for a Single Vehicle Accident

The reasons for a solo vehicle crash vary, but many times are limited to driver error. These include distracted driving and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. However, many accidents are caused by reasons outside of the driver’s control. One of the biggest problems occurs when the road is not well-maintained. Potholes can cause the driver to lose control of his or her vehicle and result in a rollover. If the roads are not maintained, a lawsuit can be filed against the government authority in charge of roadway maintenance. Timing is an important part of filing a claim against local or state agencies, and our lawyers will ensure that all documents are filed in time.

Rollovers are a serious type of accident and cause many deaths for two reasons. Occupants of the vehicle involved in the crash who do not wear seatbelts are easily ejected from the car or truck during a rollover. Roof crush also causes fatal injuries. This is due to the lack of structural support to maintain the roof when the weight of the vehicle is pressing on it. Manufacturers are required to ensure that the roof supports two and one-half times the vehicle’s weight. If such structural support is lacking, a product liability lawsuit can be filed. Other reasons for a solo vehicle crash are:

  • Bad weather
  • Narrow shoulders
  • Bad drainage
  • Insufficient warning of a sharp curve

What an Attorney Can Do to Help

At our firm, we are determined to find out why a single-vehicle accident occurred. We don’t accept what is listed on official reports or those by an insurance company. Instead, we dispatch our own investigative team to use accident reconstruction techniques to determine liability. They also obtain videos from surveillance cameras on traffic lights and from nearby businesses. This allows our investigators to see the accident in real-time. Other than that, we also speak to witnesses who saw the solo vehicle crash occur and review all police reports for inaccuracies. At the end of this process, when all information is compiled, the data is released to our lawyers who use it to build a strong case for our client.
