Types of Brain Trauma

Brain trauma in a brain injury accident can range from mild to severe. Following are the different types that may be encountered:

  • Concussion: A concussion is generally a mild form of TBI and is the most common. Symptoms of a concussion may not show up right away. Some symptoms of a concussion can last for days, weeks or even longer.
  • Contusion: A contusion following a brain injury accident causes a bruise, resulting in bleeding on the brain called a hematoma. Bruises of this type may take months to heal.
  • Penetrating injury: An injury caused by penetration into the brain can cause bone fragments, skin and hair to enter the cranial cavity. A wound will be visible and often requires surgery to remove objects.
  • Closed head trauma: Injuries to the brain may occur without penetration. This type of injury can cause brain swelling, which must be relieved to avoid further damage.
  • Coup-contrecoup: This type of injury is caused by a contusion that occurs on both sides of the brain due to the force of impact. The original injury that caused the bruise was forceful enough to make the brain strike the other side of the skull.
  • Diffuse axonal: These injuries are severe and prevalent in motor vehicle collisions. It causes extensive lesions over large parts of the brain and can result in a vegetative state in the individual.
  • Locked-in syndrome: Locked-in syndrome occurs rarely. This is a type of brain injury where individuals are completely paralyzed but can still move their eyes. People who suffer from locked-in syndrome are awake and conscious and can hear and see but cannot react other than with their eye movements.
