Rollover Kills Redding Woman

I’m Ed Smith, a Redding Wrongful Death Lawyer. A woman died in a single-vehicle wreck in Anderson on Sunday, November 12.

I would like to express my condolences to the family and loved ones of Nicole Lannom who was taken so young in life.

What Happened?

Nicole Madisen Lannom, a 21-year-old woman from Redding was heading north on I-5 sometime around 2:15 a.m. As she approached the Deschutes Road overpass her vehicle, a Chevrolet Silverado, started to drift to the right, heading off of the roadway. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Nicole must have realized she was drifting off of the road and quickly jerked the steering wheel to correct her course. This caused the full-size pickup truck to overcorrect its course and was sent into a slide. The sliding truck turned sideways and its high center of gravity caused it enter a roll.

The violent rolling of the vehicle threw Nicole Lannom from the driver’s seat and ejected her out of the vehicle mid-roll. The injuries she sustained from the accident proved to be too severe and she was pronounced dead by attending medical professionals. CHP officers investigating the crash will not know if alcohol or drugs contributed to this incident until a toxicology report is completed during the autopsy.

How Did This Happen?

More often than not, this type of accident is caused by some form of inattention to the road ahead. Anything that takes your eyes off of the road can cause your car to drift off of the edge such as looking down at a phone, radio, food, or drifting off to sleep at the wheel. When the body senses the car leave the road, or hit a rumble strip the natural reaction is to jerk the wheel back the opposite way to get back on the road as quickly as we can. This is the wrong maneuver as it often causes over correction and loss of control. If you do find yourself drifting off the road, take your foot off the accelerator and slowly drift back onto the roadway. The less we jerk the wheel, the more we will keep control and traction while driving.

Possible Injuries

We know that the injuries received in this accident proved to be fatal. When someone is ejected in a rollover crash, the risk of severe injury is increased 21 times than if they stayed inside the vehicle and the chance of fatal injuries is increased by 91 times. In a rollover, the body is not often ejected all at once but starts with only part of the body such as an arm or torso making it out the broken window in the violent rolling before the person is completely thrown from the vehicle. This can cause crushing injuries as the weight of the vehicle rolls onto the exposed body parts. These injuries are often not repairable and require amputation of the limb if the victim survives. If the head, neck, or chest are crushed, the injuries are highly likely to be fatal.
