Rainy Days and Mondays in Fair Oaks

The Monday morning commute was a nightmare as motorists spun out of control on slick surface streets and highways throughout Sacramento.

Multiple Weather Related Traffic Accidents

California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported numerous accidents on our local highways that were due to weather.  More specifically rain.

At commute time this morning, it was raining hard enough to warrant the windshield wipers, and in California this means you must turn your vehicle’s headlights on as well.

Why so Many Weather Related Accidents?

  • Commuting on the wet highways is hazardous, not so much because of the rain, but because motorists don’t match their driving speed to the slick and rainy road conditions.
  • Most people fail to allow for more time to get to and from work and school in rainy weather.
  • A good number of motorists still attempt to drive “as if” it were a sunny and dry day.

It is extremely dangerous not to take into account the weather conditions when traveling.

According to the California Highway Patrol, auto accidents increase by 203% when it rains.

Sacramento Truck Accident

Around 6:00 a.m. this morning a truck plowed into the center divide on northbound Interstate 5 near Seamus Avenue.  The rain was coming down pretty good at that hour.

Other vehicles became involved in this accident as well.

Multiple Vehicle Accident

There was a multi-vehicle pile-up on eastbound Highway 50 near the off ramp of 59th Street.

Tree limb falls on vehicle

A tree limb came down on a vehicle at the American River Drive on ramp to Watt Avenue at about 9:30 a.m.

Blue Skies

This storm is expected to be out of here by Tuesday morning.

Besides all the weather related auto accidents, the storm brought some well-need rain to the Sacramento region.

Here are some tips brought to you courtesy of the Edward A Smith Law Offices:

  • Exercise extreme caution when driving in rainy weather conditions.
  • Allow even more distance than you would in good weather between you and other vehicles.
  • Drive with your headlights on and use your turn signals.
  • Brake gentler and sooner than you would in normal weather conditions.
  • If you suddenly begin hydroplaning, let off of the gas pedal and steer straight until you regain traction. Only tap the brake if necessary.

These information should help keep you and your loved ones safe as you navigate the wet roadways.
