Quadriceps Rupture Injuries

Quadriceps Rupture Injuries – An auto accident can happen at any time. While some accidents lead to relatively minor injuries, severe injuries can lead to life-long complications or even death. Some statistics published by Driver Knowledge include:

  • Close to 15 percent of people do not wear their seat belt at all while in a car.
  • Those who do not wear their seat belt are 30 times more likely to be ejected from the vehicle in the event of an accident.
  • About a quarter of car accidents result in traumatic injuries.

One of the injuries that someone could develop in the event of an accident is a tear of the quadriceps tendon.

A Tear of the Quadriceps Tendon

The role of the quadriceps is to attach the muscle to the top of the knee. There are four different heads of the quadriceps, thus the name. Tears of this muscle can be either:

  • Partial tears: Some of the fibers in the muscle tissue are torn, but the tendon is still in one piece.
  • Complete tears: The tendon has been split into two pieces and is no longer attached at both ends.

If a complete tear has taken place, the tendon is no longer attached to the kneecap. Therefore, contraction of the muscles and bending of the knee cannot take place. This can be seen with direct trauma in an auto accident and can lead to significant mobility problems.

Treatment of a Rupture of the Quadriceps Tendon

If someone has sustained a complete tear of his or her quadriceps tendon, this will almost always require surgery to reattach the muscle to the kneecap. The sooner this is performed after an injury, the better the prognosis of the individual. This procedure is performed by:

  • Placing stitches in the tendon.
  • Drilling holes in the kneecap.
  • Reattaching the tendon to the kneecap by using the sutures.

Most people will need to spend some time in the hospital after the procedure is finished and will often require physical therapy to regain the range of motion and function of their knee.

Help from a Lawyer

If people have sustained a complete tear of their quadriceps tendon and require surgery, they are likely going to spend an extended amount of time in a hospital. They will also probably need physical therapy to help heal their injury. This can place families under a lot of stress and lead to many questions. For help with these situations, it is a good idea to meet with a personal injury lawyer in Sacramento. You and your family could be entitled to financial compensation.
