Multiple-Vehicle Crash on Roseville Road Injures Pedestrian

A pedestrian injury accident was reported in the Foothill Farms area of Sacramento on November 19 as a result of a multiple-vehicle collision. The Foothill Farms accident happened shortly before 8:00 a.m. along northbound Roseville Road at Tacomic Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) incident report. Six vehicles were allegedly involved in the collision, and a pedestrian was reported as injured.

Pedestrian Injury Accident Investigated to Determine Fault in Six Vehicle Crash

An off-duty fireman and nurse were at the scene of the accident before emergency responders with the Sacramento Fire Department arrived. The officer took over, diverting traffic away from the crash. It was reported that the injured pedestrian was transported to Mercy San Juan Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. The accident is under investigation by the CHP to find out how it occurred and to assign fault.

Causes of a Pedestrian Injury Accident

Pedestrian accident injuries are often caused by negligent motorists, especially at intersections. Because pedestrians have no protection when they are struck by a motor vehicle, injuries are often severe and even permanently disabling. The most common types of distractions that lead to a pedestrian injury accident include:

  • Distracted driving: When the driver is focusing on talking with others, texting or doing something other than concentrating on the traffic, especially at an intersection, it can lead to a pedestrian injury accident.
  • Running a red light: Red light runners are common. However, when a driver runs through a red light or stop sign, they can strike a pedestrian in the middle of the crosswalk who is passing through the intersection legally.
  • Speeding: When a driver is going above the speed limit, it limits the motorist’s ability to stop quickly and increases the likelihood of them losing control of their car. In addition, the faster a driver is going when they strike a pedestrian, the more serious the risk of traumatic injuries or a fatality.
  • Reckless driving: A reckless driver may fail to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, run the light, make a risky turn or engage in other behaviors that endanger someone who is on foot.
  • Drunk or drugged driving: Those who are intoxicated by drugs or alcohol are unable to drive safely because their judgment is clouded, reflexes are diminished, and vision can be affected.

Types of Injuries That Can Occur in a Pedestrian Injury Accident

Because of their vulnerability, injuries that involve a pedestrian can be devastating. Some of the more common injuries include:

  • Bone fractures in the legs: Serious bone fractures in the legs of a pedestrian can occur because this is where contact with the vehicle is commonly made.
  • Traumatic brain injuries: Whether the pedestrian is actually run over by a vehicle or tossed into the air or onto the hood of the car, traumatic brain injuries can occur. This type of trauma can range from a concussion to brain hemorrhage or worse.
  • Spinal cord damage: Damage to the spinal cord can result in temporary or permanent paralysis.
  • Facial trauma: Facial trauma can cause damage to the teeth and face, including disfigurement and scarring.
