Injuries from Pedestrian Accidents

Individuals who have been struck by a motor vehicle are at a high risk of suffering a traumatic injury, which has the potential to be serious or even fatal in nature. The common types of injuries sustained from pedestrian accidents include the following:

  • Internal Injuries: Individuals who have suffered extensive damage to the internal organs can experience significant blood loss. This particularly involves internal bleeding that can further lead to wrongful death.
  • Femur Fractures: This type of injury is common in pedestrian accidents due to the position of vehicle bumpers at the time of impact. Femur fractures involve a fracture of the large bone in the thigh of the leg.
  • Pelvic Fractures: This type of fracture is often associated with femur fractures due to the force of the head of the femur into the hip socket of the pelvis, resulting in displacement. Surgery is sometimes needed to place the bones back into their appropriate anatomic location.
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): Brain trauma can be very complex and life-changing for the person injured and their friends and family. When an individual experiences an impact or disturbance of the brain, they may experience symptoms such as changes in personality, memory loss, feelings of dizziness, difficulty speaking and changes in sleeping patterns. Those who have suffered a TBI should document all symptoms to receive proper treatment for their injury.

Pedestrian Accident Fatality Statistics

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that traffic accidents claimed the lives of 5,376 pedestrians in 2015, a significant increase from 4,884 in 2014. Seventy-one percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred at non-intersections when compared to intersections for pedestrian location.
