One Individual Fatally Injured After Single-Vehicle Accident in Eureka

On Wednesday, September 30, 2020, one person was left with fatal injuries following a single-vehicle accident in Eureka. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department is still withholding the identity of the decedent pending notification of next-of-kin. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicated that the collision involved two vehicles, but that one was parked and had nobody inside of it at the time of the crash. The incident remains under CHP investigation.

Crash Information

CHP reports stated that the accident occurred on Herrick Avenue, a short distance west of the Eureka Municipal Golf Course. CHP Sgt. Mike Campbell stated that officers are still unsure about what time the crash happened. However, preliminary investigations of the accident scene suggest that a small, gray Jeep SUV was driving east on the 300 block of Herrick when the driver apparently lost control.

CHP indicated that, at this time, the Jeep traveled off-road, narrowly avoided a collision with a nearby telephone pole, and eventually crashed head-on into a parked Dodge Ram truck. The truck was reportedly hooked up to a trailer. Photos taken of the Jeep show extreme damage to the front end of the vehicle.

Investigation

CHP has stated that officers have been canvassing the surrounding neighborhood in order to learn more about this incident. According to the police, nobody saw the wrecked vehicle before 7:08 a.m.

So far, investigating officers have not stated what factors they believe could have been involved in this tragic accident. Car accidents like this one can be complicated and may involve numerous causal factors, many of which aren’t under motorist control. Common non-motorist accident factors include driving vehicles with defective parts or on roadways with damaged pavement.

Additionally, investigating an accident with no witnesses can be a very difficult job for the police. Because officers can’t ask anybody for a first-hand account of the accident, they may overlook critical evidence that could have a major impact on a wrongful death claim. The best way to make sure the crash is investigated to the fullest possible extent, it’s important to work with an experienced attorney who can conduct their own accident investigation.
