Napa County Crash Leads to DUI Arrest

Three people were injured and taken to the hospital after a single-vehicle car accident that took place in Napa County on Sunday, May 19, 2019. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials said that they suspect the accident was caused by driving under the influence and have placed the driver of the involved vehicle under arrest. While all three individuals involved in the accident were hospitalized, police reported that their injuries were not life-threatening. The collision remains under investigation by CHP.

Crash Details

The accident happened at about 1:50 p.m. on Highway 121/12 close to the Sonoma county line. An 18-year-old man from Sonoma had been driving a 2003 Ford Mustang south on the highway to the north of the Haire Lane junction. The driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle and veered off of the road, traveling a short distance before striking a dirt embankment and coming to a stop.

Responders at the collision scene found all three vehicle occupants with injuries. The two passengers of the vehicle were identified as Sonoma residents aged 18 and 24. Both passengers and the driver were taken to the Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa to be treated and screened for further injuries. Responders indicated that all vehicle occupants had been wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

The driver of the vehicle was placed under arrest before being released into hospital custody. After receiving treatment for his injuries, he was booked into the Napa County jail.

DUI Accidents

Driving under the influence of intoxicating substances is dangerous and has one of the leading causes of injury crashes in Napa County. According to information from police reports, there were 881 traumatic vehicle accidents caused by intoxicated drivers in Napa between 2007 and 2018, making DUI the fourth most common cause of collisions in the area.

Not only does intoxicated driving cause a high number of accidents, but these crashes tend to have more severe injuries than those that don’t involve DUI. In Napa County, DUI accidents were about twice as likely to involve a serious or fatal injury.

Liability

Because driving under the influence is so dangerous, the people who choose to do so can frequently be held responsible for the damage they’ve caused. This is possible through personal injury claims, which can be filed against negligent drivers and their insurers. Payments from personal injury cases can help people cover their medical expenses as well as costs related to lost income, loss of quality of life, and more. If you believe that you may have a viable personal injury case, the best thing to do is get in touch with a Napa personal injury lawyer who has experience dealing with cases like yours.
