Things to Know About Crashes Involving Big Rigs

Big rig crashes can be traumatic and life-changing events, particularly if multiple vehicles are involved. The consequences are much worse than passenger vehicle accidents because of the many factors that come into play. This includes the overwhelming weight, size, and momentum of 18-wheelers. Occupants of smaller vehicles are often left with traumatic injuries. Seeking financial recovery for damages incurred starts with a bodily injury claim against the at-fault party and their insurer. A successful claim requires clear evidence demonstrating negligence on the other side’s part.

Despite the state and federal regulations that oversee the trucking industry, not all truck drivers and trucking companies uphold them. Trucking companies may pressure truckers into driving long periods without sufficient rest to meet strict delivery deadlines. This may lead to drowsiness and fatigue behind the wheel. Truck driver fatigue is a common reason for big rig crashes. Other common causes of truck accidents include DUI, distracted driving, failure to inspect and maintain the truck, and more.
