Mesothelioma Complications

Mesothelioma Complications – There are several different diseases that people can develop through occupational exposure. One disease that often receives a lot of attention is mesothelioma, which is a dangerous lung disease. Mesothelioma has received widespread attention because of the dangers that it poses. Some statistics that have been published by Asbestos include:

  • Over a period of 17 years (ending in 2015), more than 45,000 people were killed by mesothelioma.
  • About four out of every five people who died because of mesothelioma were male.
  • Around a third of those who died of this disease were 75 years of age or older.

While many of the symptoms of mesothelioma come from the direct lung damage that this disease can cause, there are other complications that mesothelioma can cause which deserve attention as well.

An Overview: Complications of Mesothelioma

Many complications can result from mesothelioma. Some of the common examples include:

Collapsed Lung: As mesothelioma degrades the pleural lining of the lung, the tissue can become damaged. This can allow air to escape from the lung into the pleural sac. This pressure in the pleural sac can collapse the lung, leading to a pneumothorax.

Metastasis: This is one of the most dangerous complications. Metastasis is the term used to describe the process of mesothelioma spreading to areas outside the lung. When this happens, the disease is exponentially harder to treat, and the prognosis is very poor.

Treatment Side Effects: The side effects of treatment should not be overlooked. Sometimes, people can require chemotherapy or radiation to treat mesothelioma. This can cause vomiting, weight loss, and hair loss. This can also cause numerous quality of life issues which people may need help managing.

There are significant complications and quality of life issues that can arise when someone has been diagnosed with mesothelioma. Because of this, it is vital for everyone to know where to find help.

  • How does someone contract mesothelioma in the first place?
  • What is the prognosis for someone who has been diagnosed with mesothelioma?
  • How is the cost of the hospital stay going to be paid for?
  • Is insurance going to cover the costs associated with medical care?
  • Could this dangerous disease have been avoided?
