Meniscus Tear Surgery

Meniscus Tear Surgery – When people get into a motor vehicle, they take on the risk of an accident occurring every time. Even the most minor of accidents could lead to serious injuries. Among the different injuries that someone could sustain is a tear of the meniscus. According to a research study that was published by the Academy of Emergency Medicine:

  • Over a ten year period, more than 6 million knee injuries were treated in emergency rooms in the United States.
  • The most common age range which presented with knee injuries were teenagers and young adults.
  • The most common diagnosis was a knee sprain, followed by a knee contusion and then by puncture wounds.
  • Some of the most common causes included sports, auto accidents, falls, and assaults.

These numbers show that knee injuries are common and can vary in their severity. While many people are familiar with ACL tears, there are lots of other injuries that someone could suffer as well. One injury that is often overlooked is a tear of the meniscus. When someone sustains a meniscus tear, there are multiple treatment options.

Treatment of a Meniscus Tear: Non-Surgical Management

There are many different ways that someone might sustain a meniscus tear but they all involve a sudden jerking, twisting, or compressive injury of the knee. In some cases, it could be just a partial tear. In other situations, it might be a complete tear. The symptoms include knee pain on movement, swelling, and difficulty walking. The mainstay of treatment is rest, ice, and elevation. Once the swelling goes down, physical therapy and rehab can start. This is important for strengthening the muscles of the knee. Because the meniscus cushion is no longer present, the muscles of the knee need to provide extra support. In some cases, this might not be enough.

Surgery for a Tear of the Meniscus

When non-surgical treatment doesn’t control the symptoms, surgery for a meniscus tear can be performed. In this procedure, the fragments and shards of the torn meniscus are either removed (called a meniscectomy), or they are sewn back together (in the case of a partial or incomplete tear). After this, physical therapy must still be completed so that the individual can learn how to walk on the repaired knee. It may be a bit uncomfortable at first, but this will change with time. The typical recovery process following this surgery is about 3 to 6 months.
