Major Injuries in a Car Accident

Some of the most common types of major injuries in a car accident are:

  • Head injury: Injuries to the head can be minor or major depending on the force of impact. Some involve a jarring back and forth motion of the head, which results in sprain and strain to the muscles in the cervical and upper thoracic areas. This type of injury can cause short-term or prolonged pain and disability. Other types of head injuries involve the brain. Here, the force of impact plays a vital role. Injuries can range from a concussion to severe brain tissue damage. Blood often accumulates on the surface of the brain, applying pressure to the tissue underneath. This pressure can have devastating effects on the person’s mentation, requiring surgery to relieve the symptoms.
  • Chest injuries: The chest is vulnerable in a car accident due to its position behind the wheel or dash. If the driver is not buckled in, chances are greater that their chest will impact the steering wheel with a sufficient amount of force to cause damage to the ribs, lungs, and possibly the heart. Even if the driver is buckled in, the restraints themselves can cause bruising and damage to the tissues.
  • Lacerations: Loose objects in the vehicle can become airborne after a collision. They include glasses, cell phones, GPS mounted systems, coffee thermoses, and others. Usually, the lacerations are minor, and sutures are used to treat them.
  • Extremities: In most vehicles, there is not a lot of room for the arms and legs in a crash. A side crash, for instance, can injure the pelvic area or a major injury such as a femur fracture. The arms can be caught up against the steering wheel or trapped in a deployed airbag. The knees are susceptible to a major injury as they crash against the dashboard. This injury is so prevalent, it is referred to as a dashboard knee. Some newer vehicles are being built with airbags to protect the knees.

Investigating a Major Injury Crash

Evidence is key to a successful outcome in an accident claim. To make sure adequate evidence is gathered, we dispatch our investigators to the accident scene. They interview witnesses and obtain video footage of the accident. Our investigators also use accident reconstruction techniques to determine liability. Police accident reports are carefully reviewed to search for inaccuracies that will play a significant role in both insurance negotiations and in court. Once the information is accumulated, it is passed on to our legal team. Our lawyers use it to help build a strong case against the at-fault party and obtain the compensation our client deserves.
