Pedestrian Fatality on Highway 4 near Antioch

Recently, one fatality was reported in a pedestrian accident on Highway 4 near Antioch. The vehicle-vs.-pedestrian collision took place on the westbound lanes of Highway 4, just east of Laurel Road, around 9:20 p.m. on Friday, May 8. Before the CHP and emergency responders arrived, a man was hit by a Nissan sedan and found lying on the road. Emergency responders at the scene pronounced him dead. The Nissan driver, a 23-year old female from Bethel Island, was seriously injured from the crash and was transferred to a local hospital for treatment. The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff Coroner’s Division has identified the decedent as 29-year-old Steven Armstrong of Pinole.

According to findings from the preliminary investigation, the Nissan driver was in the westbound lanes of Highway 4 in a 2012 Nissan Versa. For reasons unknown, the man was allegedly in the road and in the direct path of the approaching Nissan. The woman was reportedly unable to prevent coming into contact with the pedestrian and collided into him. CHP said the driver sustained major injuries but her injuries are not life-threatening. She was taken to the John Muir Center in Walnut Creek for treatment. There were two additional occupants inside the Nissan, but neither suffered injury from the crash. The accident is still being investigated by the California Highway Patrol, and no reports seem to confirm the full story of what caused the accident to happen.

Losing a Loved One After an Antioch Pedestrian Accident

Receiving the news that a family member was killed in an accident is heartbreaking, especially when the vast majority of accidents are caused by human error. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an estimated 94 percent of accidents occur due to human error. This can refer to distracted driving, drunk driving, road rage, and many other driver errors. The loss of a beloved family member is one of the most devastating pains that someone can experience, and not knowing exactly what happened can make it even more challenging to move forward. Those answers may be found in a wrongful death claim, which can help take care of grieving family members in their time of loss and bereavement.

Wrongful Death Damages

It is clear that no level of monetary compensation can make up for the loss of a life. However, a wrongful death case can be crucial in not only honoring the meaningful life that was lost, but also to offer financial security for the family members left behind. The type of recovery that a family can make through a wrongful death claim can help with the following damages:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Loss of a loved one’s companionship, protection, and care
  • Medical bills related to the fatal pedestrian accident, which can be claimed through a survival action
  • The financial support and benefits a loved one could have continually provided to family members had the fatal accident not happened
  • The monetary value of household services as well as gifts that were given to the family by the decedent (may need to acquire an economist for the case to assess the real extent of this type of damage)

Healing from the unexpected death of a family member can be overwhelming, especially if you are trying to figure out how to pursue legal action on your own during this time. The video shown below will give you a brief overview of what a wrongful death case means and what options may be available to get your family on the road to recovery.
