Florin Intersection Accident Injures Pedestrian

Man Injured in Pedestrian Accident at Florin Intersection

A pedestrian was injured in a Florin intersection accident on June 6. The accident happened at about 9:30 in the morning along Florin Road where it intersects with East Parkway near the Chevron gas station. According to a report issued by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the man was trying to walk into the roadway when he was struck. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The accident is under investigation to determine how the Florin intersection accident happened and to assign fault.

Area Details

Pedestrian accidents are becoming more common in Sacramento County. In the above accident, the intersection at Florin Road and East Parkway is a busy one. However, it is equipped with traffic lights and crosswalks and offers good visibility for both motorists and walkers. East Parkway is a two-lane road and Florin Road is a multi-lane divided roadway. Both have turn lanes to make it easier for drivers as they approach the large intersection. However, complex intersections can be confusing for drivers and pedestrians alike. It can also be more difficult for a pedestrian to cross before the light changes when the intersection is large. This is especially true if the pedestrian is elderly, disabled, or has a child with them.

Crosswalk Safety

Crosswalks are designated areas where pedestrians can cross a street safely. In California, drivers are obligated to yield the right of way to the pedestrian. This is true whether or not the pedestrian is in a crosswalk. Pedestrians are obliged not to step off the curb and enter the crosswalk when a vehicle is close by and may not be able to stop. If the pedestrian is crossing the road without the use of a crosswalk, the risk of a Florin intersection accident is higher. If pedestrian signals are available at the crosswalk, the responsibility of the walker changes. When pedestrian signals are present in a crosswalk, the walker must wait until they are given the instruction to walk.

How a Pedestrian Can Stay Safe

While safety depends on a variety of factors, there are things a pedestrian can do to lessen the risk of a Florin intersection accident. These are:

  • Use crosswalks if possible.
  • Keep a lookout for turning vehicles.
  • Obey crosswalk signals.
  • Look left, right, and left when crossing a street.
  • If the street has multiple lanes, check all of them before crossing.
  • Don’t drink.
  • Avoid distractions such as listening to music with headphones, texting, or talking on a mobile device.
  • Be aware of drivers using a cell phone.
  • Listen for engine noise from an approaching motor vehicle.
  • Remember that electric vehicles are quiet, so a visual inspection of the street is vital.
  • Don’t assume because you are in a crosswalk a car will stop. Look before leaving the curb even if you have the right of way.

Help After an Accident Injury

Following an accident, the injured person can face lost wages, high medical bills, and other costs. If the accident was caused by the negligent actions of another person or entity, the injured person can hold them legally responsible. Consulting with a personal injury lawyer experienced in pedestrian accidents is a good first step toward recovering those costs. Insurance companies commonly offer less than is needed to cover expenses, and a lawyer can deal with them on your behalf. In some cases, the matter may have to go to court to recover what you need. This is especially true if the injury is long-lasting and expenses are high. An attorney can compile the evidence needed to build a strong case.
