Femoral Artery Transection Following Bicycle Accidents

Femoral Artery Transection Following Bicycle Accidents – Many people view learning how to ride a bike as a rite of passage, and many say that once you learn how to ride a bike, you never forget. Unfortunately, many people also sustain serious injuries in bicycle accidents, particularly those who have an accident involving a pedestrian or a motor vehicle. According to some of the statistics that have been published by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center:

  • In 2006, there were more than 770 people killed while riding bicycles.
  • This number increased to almost 820 in 2015, representing about a 6 percent increase.
  • An estimated 45,000 people suffered serious injuries in bicycle accidents in 2015.
  • The total costs of injuries and fatalities from bicycle accidents is around $4 billion per year.

These numbers should help to demonstrate just how serious bicycle accidents can be. There exists a wide variety of traumatic injuries which someone could sustain in a bicycle accident, and one of these is a transection of the femoral artery.

A Case Report: Femoral Artery Transection

Recently, a case report was published discussing someone who had sustained a serious injury in a bicycle accident. A young man was riding his bike down the road when he was involved in a crash with a motor vehicle. He flipped over his handlebars and landed on the pavement, suffering serious injuries. He was dazed and confused. Very quickly, a large bruise had developed on the inside of his right leg. He started to feel light-headed, and when EMS arrived, they were concerned that he had suffered a serious internal injury. He was given an IV bag of fluids and transported to a nearby hospital.

Emergent Treatment of a Ruptured Artery

If someone has ruptured his or her femoral artery in a bicycle accident, the treatment focuses on stabilizing the individual and stopping the bleeding as quickly as possible. On arrival, imaging scans were completed which demonstrated that he had sustained a cut along his left femoral artery. He was taken to an operating room so that the bleeding could be stopped as quickly as possible. He required a blood transfusion to replace some of the blood that he had lost in the accident. The laceration along the femoral artery was repaired, and the bleeding eventually stopped. He recovered and was discharged after a few days in the hospital.
