Car Involved in Truck Crash at Highway 86 Intersection

A highway collision occurred recently involving a semi truck and motor vehicle in Oasis that caused multiple injuries and a fatality. The collision occurred at about 2:00 p.m. at the Highway 86 intersection with Johnson Street near the Salton Sea. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the semi, with two trailers attached, was going east along Johnson Street as a Toyota was progressing south along the highway when the crash occurred.

Injuries and a Fatality Reported in Intersection Truck Crash

As the Freightliner big rig passed through the intersection, the Toyota struck between the two trailers and lodged under the tongue connecting them. There were four people riding in the Toyota who became trapped. First responders had to extricate all of them. The Toyota driver was a female, age 63, and the other passenger in the front was another woman, Lucila Lopes-Romero, a Pomona resident, age 67, who died on the way to a hospital in Palm Springs.

Investigation Conducted in Intersection Crash to Determine Cause

Minor injuries were suffered by the two people in the back seat, and both were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. The semi driver did not suffer any injuries. Traffic lanes were blocked on Highway 86 and a SigAlert was issued as an investigation was conducted by the CHP into the cause of the semi truck crash.

Determining Liability in a Truck Accident

While the driver of a motor vehicle involved in a truck crash with a big rig may be liable for accident injuries or fatalities, the truck driver or others might also be responsible. For example, although tandem rigs are allowed in California under CVC Section 35401(b)(1), these double trailers may not be longer than 75 feet in total length. In addition, the driver must be qualified to handle a tandem trailer, which requires additional testing beyond that for a regular CDL license.

Government Negligence in a Truck Crash

When roadway maintenance is negligent, signal lights are out of sync or don’t function properly and other dangers exist at an intersection, it can lead to a serious accident, especially if a semi is involved. If it turns out that government negligence caused or added to the accident, they may be held liable for damages. The statute of limitations for government claims is six months, so getting assistance from an injury lawyer can be a good idea.
