How to Protect Yourself as a Motorcyclist

An accident can happen even if you are driving smartly and safely. However, you can take measures to protect yourself from getting into an accident while on a motorcycle. Below are some of the best motorcycle safety guidelines:

  • Use a properly fitting bike for your physique: Getting a bike that suits you physically is more important than one may realize. In a seated position, a motorcyclist’s feet should be firmly in contact with the ground. The handlebars should be in an easy reaching distance and fit comfortably to your hands.
  • Wear a helmet at all times: The chance of getting a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is dramatically reduced by wearing a helmet. When purchasing a helmet, make sure that it fits your head correctly and conforms to federal requirements. Remember, it is illegal to ride a motorcycle without a helmet on!
  • Maintain a skilled understanding of safe motorcycle riding habits: Even for a longtime motorcyclist, it is recommended to routinely test your skill set. Completing a course by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation is one of many great options.
  • Use a motorcycle with antilock brakes: Driving a bike that is equipped with antilock brakes reduces the chances of a fatal accident by roughly 70 percent.
  • Be aware of your surroundings: Stay on the lookout for distracted and/or aggressive drivers. Avoid tailgating other vehicles to give yourself more time to react to an unexpected event.
  • Dress safely and appropriately: Wear protective gear, which can include specific types of jackets, pants, boots, and gloves. Also, if you are riding at night, consider wearing reflective clothing to increase your visibility on the road.
  • Check for upcoming hazards: Noticing a road hazard is even more critical for motorcyclists than other motorists, as a motorcycle offers less protection. Potholes, uneven edges, and slick surfaces should all be visually accounted for to your best ability.
